How much does a pallet weigh? Weights by type, material and moisture
A standard 48 × 40 wood stringer pallet weighs about 30 to 60 lb (14 to 27 kg). New green hardwood pallets sit at the top of that range and dry ones near the bottom. A EUR pallet weighs about 25 kg (55 lb), pooled 48 × 40 block pallets about 60 to 70 lb, and plastic pallets 14 to 70 lb depending on type.

A pallet's weight depends on three things: how much material is in it, what the material is, and, for wood, how much water it holds. The same 48 × 40 design can weigh 59 lb the day it is built from green hardwood and 37 lb once it has dried. This guide gives typical weights by type, then shows how to estimate the weight of any wood pallet.
Pallet weight by type

Wood figures for the GMA-style pallet come from published PDS spec sheets. Pooled, plastic, presswood, metal and paper figures are indicative ranges from manufacturer and distributor data. Your supplier's spec sheet is the authoritative number.
How much does a 48 × 40 wood pallet weigh?
A 48 × 40 GMA-style wood stringer pallet weighs about 30 to 60 lb. A published PDS example gives exact figures for one design:
| Design | Board feet | At manufacture (green) | At 12% moisture |
|---|---|---|---|
| GMA-style 48 × 40, mixed eastern hardwood | 13.5 | 59 lb (27 kg) | 37 lb (17 kg) |
| Heavier 48 × 40, oak and dense hardwood mix | 17.0 | 75 lb (34 kg) | 48 lb (22 kg) |
| 48 × 40, spruce-pine-fir (SPF) | 13.9 | 45 lb (20 kg) | 30 lb (14 kg) |
The first design has 7 top deckboards and 5 bottom deckboards, all 5/8 in thick, on 3 stringers of 1-3/8 × 3-1/2 in. You can open it in the designer, which estimates weight from the board feet, species and moisture you choose.
Why moisture changes pallet weight so much
Moisture content (MC) is the weight of water in wood divided by the weight of the dry wood. Freshly sawn hardwood used for pallets is often 50% to 80% MC, which means a large share of a new pallet's weight is water. As the pallet dries toward the humidity of its surroundings (typically 12% to 19% MC indoors or under cover), that water leaves.
Using the PDS example above:
- 59 lb at manufacture (green)
- about 39 lb kiln dried to 19% MC
- 37 lb at 12% MC
- a 22 lb (37%) drop from drying alone
Green lumber is common in North American pallets because it is cheaper and easier to nail. Kiln-dried pallets cost more but weigh less from day one and resist mold. EUR pallets must be built from dry wood, which is one reason their weight is more consistent. See pallet lumber moisture for the full picture.
Heat treatment for ISPM 15 is not the same as kiln drying. A heat-treated (HT) pallet has reached 56 °C at the core for 30 minutes to kill pests. It may still be wet. See heat-treated pallets.
How species affects weight
Dense hardwoods such as oak weigh about 60% more than spruce or fir at the same moisture content. Published density tables put red oak at about 63 lb/ft³ green and 44 lb/ft³ kiln dried, and Southern Yellow Pine at about 52 to 55 lb/ft³ green and 36 to 41 lb/ft³ dry. One board foot is 1/12 of a cubic foot.
| Species group | lb per board foot, green | lb per board foot, about 12% MC |
|---|---|---|
| Oak | about 5.2 | about 3.7 |
| Mixed eastern hardwood | about 4.4 | about 2.7 |
| Southern Yellow Pine | about 4.4 | about 3.2 |
| Douglas fir | about 3.9 | about 2.8 |
| Spruce-pine-fir (SPF) | about 3.2 | about 2.2 |
These factors include nails and are calibrated to published PDS weights where available. They are estimates; real lumber varies by growth rate and density within a species. See pallet wood species.
How to estimate the weight of a wood pallet
- Add up the board feet. For each part, multiply thickness × width × length in inches, divide by 144, and multiply by the count. The board feet calculator does this for you.
- Pick a factor from the species table for the moisture condition.
- Multiply. Board feet × lb per board foot = approximate pallet weight. The factors in the table already include the nails.
Worked example, GMA-style 48 × 40:
- Top deck: 2 × 5/8 × 5-1/2 × 40 + 5 × 5/8 × 3-1/2 × 40 = 4.95 bd ft
- Bottom deck: 2 × 5/8 × 5-1/2 × 40 + 3 × 5/8 × 3-1/2 × 40 = 3.73 bd ft
- Stringers: 3 × 1-3/8 × 3-1/2 × 48 = 4.81 bd ft
- Total: 13.5 bd ft × 4.37 lb/bd ft (green mixed hardwood) = 59 lb
Plastic, metal and other pallet weights
Plastic pallet weight follows the resin weight, and the resin weight follows the job. Nestable pallets with 9 feet and an open deck are lightest. Rackable pallets with runners, closed decks and steel tubes are heaviest. Published examples include a 1200 × 800 nestable at 6.5 to 7 kg, a rackable 48 × 40 structural-foam pallet at 49 lb, and a heavy rackable HDPE 48 × 40 at 68.3 lb. The plastic pallets guide covers the trade-offs.
Metal pallets are heaviest per unit but last longest. Aluminum pallets are much lighter than steel of the same capacity. Paper and honeycomb pallets are the lightest pallets that still have fork openings, and slip sheets are lighter still.
Why pallet weight matters
- Freight cost. On LTL shipments the pallet is part of the billed weight and part of the density calculation. See freight class and density.
- Truckload weight. 26 wood pallets at 55 lb add about 1,430 lb of tare to a full truckload.
- Air freight. Air cargo bills on weight, so light plastic, paper or presswood pallets pay back quickly.
- Handling. Manual handling of empty pallets is a common injury source. A 60 lb pallet is above the 51 lb load constant used in the NIOSH lifting equation, so team lifts or equipment are the safer choice.
- Retailer rules. Some receivers limit total unit load weight, including the pallet.
Specifying weight on an order
If weight matters, state a maximum pallet weight and the moisture condition it applies to (for example "≤ 45 lb at time of delivery" or "kiln dried to 19% MC"). Ask the supplier for the weight at manufacture and at 12% to 19% MC. A PDS spec sheet includes both.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a standard 48x40 wood pallet weigh?
About 30 to 60 lb (14 to 27 kg). A new GMA-style hardwood pallet built green weighs about 59 lb, about 39 lb kiln dried to 19% moisture content, and about 37 lb at 12%. Softwood pallets are lighter.
How much does a Euro pallet weigh?
An EPAL 1 (1200 × 800 × 144 mm) weighs about 25 kg (55 lb). It is built from dry wood, so its weight changes less than a green-built North American pallet.
How much does a CHEP pallet weigh?
Pooled 48 × 40 block pallets from CHEP and PECO are commonly quoted at about 60 to 70 lb (27 to 32 kg). They carry more lumber than a GMA-style stringer pallet. PECO publishes 22.2 board feet of kiln-dried Southern Yellow Pine for its 48 × 40.
Why do two identical pallets weigh different amounts?
Moisture and species. Wood cut green can hold more water than wood fiber by weight, and dense hardwoods like oak weigh far more than spruce or pine. A pallet can lose a third of its weight as it dries.
How much does a plastic pallet weigh?
About 14 lb (6 kg) for a light nestable export pallet up to about 70 lb (32 kg) for a heavy rackable pallet with steel reinforcement. Most 48 × 40 plastic pallets are 20 to 55 lb.

They are washable, ISPM 15 exempt and long-lived, cost several times more than wood, and carry three separate load ratings.
- GlossaryMoisture content (pallet lumber)Moisture content (MC) is the weight of water in wood expressed as a percentage of the wood's oven-dry weight. Pallet specs usually call for 19% or less when dry wood is needed; green lumber is above about 28%.
- GlossaryWhat is a board foot?A board foot is a unit of lumber volume equal to 144 cubic inches, a board 1 in thick, 12 in wide and 12 in long (about 0.00236 m³). Pallet board feet = thickness × width × length in inches ÷ 144, summed over every part.
- GuidesFreight class and density: how to classify a pallet shipmentFreight density is the shipment's weight in pounds divided by its volume in cubic feet, measured at the outside of the loaded pallet. On the NMFC 13-tier scale, effective July 19, 2025, density maps to classes from 50 (50 lb/ft³ or more) to 400 (under 1 lb/ft³). Some items keep their own class, so check the NMFC item.
- GuidesPallet wood species: hardwood vs softwood, and which to specifyMost North American pallets are made from mixed Eastern hardwoods (oak, maple, poplar and others) or softwoods such as Southern yellow pine and SPF. More in Fundamentals
- GuidesWhat is a pallet? Definition, parts, types and sizesA pallet is a flat, portable platform, usually wood, plastic or metal, that holds goods together as one unit load so a forklift, pallet jack or conveyor can lift and move them. Its deck sits on stringers or blocks that leave openings for forks. In North America the most common size is 48 × 40 in (1219 × 1016 mm).
- GuidesParts of a pallet: deckboards, stringers, blocks and fastenersA wood stringer pallet has top deckboards, stringers (often notched) and bottom deckboards, joined with nails. A block pallet swaps the stringers for 9 blocks and 3 stringerboards. The outermost deckboards are lead boards. Openings between the deck layers take the forks.
- GuidesHow to measure a pallet: length, width, height and every boardMeasure the stringer (or stringerboard) direction first and call it length, then the deckboard length as width, then overall height from floor to top deck. A 48 × 40 pallet is 48 in along the stringers. For a quote, also record every board's actual size, count and position, and the notch and opening sizes.
- GuidesStandard pallet height: empty pallets and maximum load heightsAn empty standard 48 × 40 wood stringer pallet is about 4-3/4 to 6 in (121 to 152 mm) tall; a GMA-style build with 5/8 in decks on 3-1/2 in stringers is 4-3/4 in. A EUR pallet is 144 mm (5.7 in). Pooled 48 × 40 block pallets are about 5.6 in. Loaded, most unit loads are kept between 48 and 72 in overall.
- GuidesHow much weight can a pallet hold? Static, dynamic and racking capacityIt depends on how the pallet is supported. A typical 48 × 40 wood pallet safely carries about 1,500 to 2,800 lb (680 to 1,270 kg) in racking or on forks, and several times that on a flat floor. A EUR pallet is rated 1,500 kg. Only the manufacturer's rating for your support condition is authoritative.
- GuidesHistory of the pallet: from skids to pooled block palletsSkids have been used since antiquity, but the modern pallet grew up with the forklift. Lift-truck platforms were patented in the 1920s and pallets for pallet jacks in the late 1930s, and World War II made them universal. CHEP (1946), the EUR pallet (1961), PDS (1984) and ISPM 15 (2002) shaped today's pallet.
