The 1200 × 1000 mm pallet (47.2 × 39.4 in) is the UK standard pallet and the common "industrial" pallet in continental Europe, the Middle East and much of Asia. It is one of the six footprints in ISO 6780. It is close in size to the North American 48 × 40, but not interchangeable in tight racking or automated systems.
What are the dimensions of a 1200 × 1000 pallet?
A 1200 × 1000 pallet is 1200 mm (47.2 in) by 1000 mm (39.4 in). Height depends on the build: about 144 to 162 mm (5.7 to 6.4 in) for block pallets. EPAL lists the EPAL 2 as 1200 × 1000 × 162 mm and the EPAL 3 as 1000 × 1200 × 144 mm; the order reflects the direction the top boards run.
Typical builds at 1200 × 1000
| Pallet | Height | Weight | Safe working load | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| EPAL 2 | 162 mm | about 35 kg | 1,250 kg | 17 boards, 9 blocks, 133 nails; base frame for chain and roller conveyors |
| EPAL 3 | 144 mm | about 30 kg | 1,500 kg | 13 boards, 9 blocks, 84 nails |
| CHEP UK wooden | 162 mm | 28 kg | 1,500 kg | 4-way, pooled (CHEP figures) |
| CP1 | 138 mm | varies | varies | Chemical industry, unidirectional bottom |
| CP6 | 156 mm | varies | varies | Chemical industry, perimeter bottom |
Figures are from EPAL and CHEP. EPAL gives stacking limits of 4,250 kg (EPAL 2) and 4,500 kg (EPAL 3) on the bottom pallet on a solid, level surface; CHEP gives 6,000 kg for its UK pallet.
The typical UK build is a block pallet with 7 or more top boards on 3 stringerboards, 9 blocks and a perimeter base, giving full 4-way entry for pallet jacks. See the 1200 × 1000 perimeter template and the CP1 template, or open the UK pallet in the designer.
How much does a 1200 × 1000 pallet weigh?
Wooden 1200 × 1000 block pallets weigh roughly 28 to 35 kg (62 to 77 lb) based on the CHEP and EPAL figures above. Light one-way versions weigh less, and heavy-duty or wet pallets weigh more. Plastic 1200 × 1000 pallets vary widely; CHEP lists a plastic 1200 × 1000 at 22 kg. See pallet weight.
How much weight can a 1200 × 1000 pallet hold?
Standard pallets are rated at about 1,250 to 1,500 kg safe working load by their makers (see the table). Racked capacity depends on the rack and beam direction and should come from the manufacturer. A custom 1200 × 1000 pallet has whatever rating its design supports. See pallet load capacity.
Who uses 1200 × 1000 pallets?
- UK: the standard pallet for grocery and FMCG, pooled by CHEP UK and others. See UK pallet sizes.
- Continental Europe: industrial goods, chemicals (CP1, CP6), beverages and building materials.
- Asia: EPAL describes the EPAL 3 as its Asian standard, and 1200 × 1000 is one of China's national standard sizes. See Asian pallet sizes.
How many 1200 × 1000 pallets fit in a truck or container?
A 13.6 m European semi-trailer takes 26 pallets of 1200 × 1000 on the floor, two across. The table above gives counts for North American trailers and ISO containers. In a 40 ft container, 1200 × 1000 pallets fit two across with the 1000 mm side across.

Frequently asked questions
What is the standard UK pallet size?
1200 × 1000 mm is the UK standard pallet, pooled by CHEP UK among others. The 1200 × 800 Euro pallet is also widely used in the UK.
What is the difference between EPAL 2 and EPAL 3?
Both are 1200 × 1000 mm. EPAL lists the EPAL 2 as 1200 × 1000 × 162 mm with a base frame, about 35 kg and 1,250 kg safe working load, and the EPAL 3 as 1000 × 1200 × 144 mm, about 30 kg and 1,500 kg safe working load. The bottom deck design and board direction differ.
What is 1200x1000 mm in inches?
About 47.2 × 39.4 in. It is close to, but not the same as, the North American 48 × 40 in (1219 × 1016 mm).
Can I use a 48x40 pallet instead of 1200x1000?
They differ by about 19 mm in length and 16 mm in width, so a 48 × 40 may not fit racking and conveyors set for 1200 × 1000. Check the receiving site's spec before substituting.

- SizesUK pallet sizes: the 1200 × 1000 standard and the Euro palletThe standard UK pallet is 1200 × 1000 mm (47.2 × 39.4 in). CHEP's UK wooden pallet at this size is 162 mm tall and 28 kg, rated 1,500 kg safe working load. The 1200 × 800 mm Euro pallet is also widely used in the UK, along with 800 × 600 half and 600 × 400 quarter pallets for retail.
- TypesCP pallets (CP1 to CP9): dimensions, construction and usesCP pallets are nine standardised wooden block pallets (CP1 to CP9) designed for the European chemical and plastics industry. They range from 760 × 1140 mm to 1300 × 1100 mm. CP1 to CP5 are 138 mm (5.4 in) high with bottom boards in one direction; CP6 to CP9 are 156 mm (6.1 in) high with perimeter or full-frame bottoms.
- Sizes1200 × 800 pallet (Euro pallet): dimensions, weight and specsA 1200 × 800 mm pallet (47.2 × 31.5 in) is the Euro pallet, standardized as EPAL 1 / EUR 1 and one of the six ISO 6780 sizes. The EPAL 1 is 144 mm tall, weighs about 25 kg, and has a safe working load of 1,500 kg. It is the standard pallet for European retail and food logistics.
- TypesBlock pallet: construction, dimensions and usesA block pallet is a wooden pallet whose deck sits on blocks, usually nine arranged 3 × 3, joined by stringerboards. The gaps between blocks give full 4-way entry for both forklifts and pallet jacks. EUR/EPAL, CP and the pooled 48 × 40 in pallets of CHEP and PECO are all block pallets.
- StandardsISO 6780: the six international pallet sizesISO 6780:2003 sets principal dimensions and tolerances of flat pallets for intercontinental handling. It recognizes six sizes: 1200 × 800, 1200 × 1000, 1219 × 1016 (48 × 40 in), 1165 × 1165, 1067 × 1067 and 1100 × 1100 mm, and covers openings, chamfers, wings, flatness and distortion.
- StandardsEPAL: the European pallet system, marks, licensing and exchangeEPAL (European Pallet Association e.V.) runs the open exchange pool for EPAL Euro pallets. Only licensed producers and repairers may make or repair them, and independent inspectors check quality. The EPAL 1 is 800 × 1200 × 144 mm, about 25 kg, with a 1,500 kg safe working load.

- Sizes800 × 600 pallet (half Euro pallet): dimensions, weight and specsAn 800 × 600 mm pallet (31.5 × 23.6 in) is the half Euro pallet, half of a 1200 × 800. EPAL makes two versions: the EPAL 6 (144 mm tall, 750 kg safe working load) and the EPAL 7 (163 mm tall, 500 kg), both about 9.5 kg. It is used for retail display and small loads.
- Sizes600 × 400 pallet (quarter pallet): dimensions, weight and specsA 600 × 400 mm pallet (23.6 × 15.7 in) is the European quarter pallet: a quarter of a 1200 × 800 Euro pallet. Most are plastic display pallets or wheeled dollies. CHEP's plastic quarter display pallet is 600 × 400 × 145 mm, weighs 2.2 kg and is rated 250 kg safe working load.
- Sizes1140 × 1140 pallet (CP3, CP8, CP9): dimensions, weight and specsA 1140 × 1140 mm pallet (44.9 × 44.9 in) is the square chemical-industry pallet, made as the CP3 (138 mm tall), CP8 and CP9 (156 mm tall). It carries drums, octabins and bulk bags, and two fit side by side inside an ISO shipping container.
- Sizes1100 × 1100 pallet (T11): dimensions, weight and specsA 1100 × 1100 mm pallet (43.3 × 43.3 in) is the Asian standard pallet, known as T11. It is one of the six ISO 6780 sizes and the standard pool pallet in Japan (JIS Z 0601, 1100 × 1100 × 144 mm), and is also a national standard size in Korea and China.
- Sizes1165 × 1165 pallet (Australian standard): dimensions, weight and specsA 1165 × 1165 mm pallet (45.9 × 45.9 in) is the Australian standard pallet, defined by AS 4068 and one of the six ISO 6780 sizes. Pooled CHEP and Loscam versions are hardwood block pallets about 150 mm tall. It was sized for Australian rail containers and fits ISO containers poorly.
- Sizes1200 × 1200 pallet: dimensions, weight and specsA 1200 × 1200 mm pallet (47.2 × 47.2 in) is a square metric pallet used for drums, bulk bags (FIBCs), IBCs and heavy industrial loads. It is not one of the six ISO 6780 sizes. It is roughly the metric counterpart of the 48 × 48 drum pallet, and it is too wide to fit two across an ISO container.
