The 1200 × 800 mm pallet (47.2 × 31.5 in) is the Euro pallet. It is standardized as the EPAL 1 (formerly marked EUR or EUR 1), listed in ISO 6780, and is the default pallet for European retail, grocery and general freight. EPAL reports more than 650 million EPAL Euro pallets in circulation.
What are the dimensions of a 1200 × 800 pallet?
The EPAL 1 is 1200 mm long, 800 mm wide and 144 mm tall (47.2 × 31.5 × 5.7 in). EPAL's own tables list it as 800 × 1200 mm, putting the 800 mm stringerboard length first, the same stringer-first logic North America uses. Most charts, including this site's, write it longer side first as 1200 × 800.
How is an EPAL 1 built?
The EPAL 1 is a block pallet with 11 boards, 9 blocks and 78 nails, according to EPAL.
| Component | EPAL 1 spec |
|---|---|
| Top deck | 5 boards, 1200 mm long, 22 mm thick: 3 × 145 mm + 2 × 100 mm wide |
| Stringerboards | 3 × 800 × 145 × 22 mm |
| Blocks | 9: 6 at 145 × 100 × 78 mm and 3 at 145 × 145 × 78 mm |
| Bottom deck | 3 boards, 1200 mm long: 2 × 100 mm + 1 × 145 mm, chamfered |
| Entry | 4-way |
| Overall height | 144 mm |
The bottom boards run the 1200 mm way only (a unidirectional bottom), so pallet jacks enter from the 800 mm ends. Forklifts enter from all four sides. See the EPAL 1 template, or open it in the designer to build a Euro-size variant.
How much does a 1200 × 800 pallet weigh?
EPAL states an EPAL 1 weighs approximately 25 kg (55 lb). Weight rises with moisture content, so a damp pallet weighs more. Plastic 1200 × 800 pallets range from light nestable models to heavy hygienic ones; see plastic pallet sizes.
How much weight can a 1200 × 800 pallet hold?
EPAL gives a safe working load of 1,500 kg for the EPAL 1, and up to 5,500 kg on the bottommost pallet when loaded pallets are stacked on a solid, level surface. Racked capacity depends on the rack design and beam direction. A non-EPAL Euro-size pallet has whatever rating its maker assigns. See pallet load capacity.
EPAL, EUR and Euro-size: what's the difference?
- EPAL pallets are made and repaired only by EPAL licensees, carry the EPAL marks on the blocks, and can be exchanged in the open EPAL pool. See EPAL.
- EUR-marked pallets are older pallets from the same system, still in circulation.
- Euro-size pallets are any 1200 × 800 pallet. Many are built to the EPAL 1 drawing but are not licensed and cannot be exchanged as EPAL.
EPAL pallets have been heat-treated to ISPM 15 since 2010, so they carry the IPPC mark for export.
Who uses 1200 × 800 pallets?
European grocery, retail and consumer goods, food and beverage, and most general freight in continental Europe and the UK. Many European racking and conveyor systems are built for it.
How many 1200 × 800 pallets fit in a truck?
A standard 13.6 m European semi-trailer takes 33 Euro pallets on the floor, three across with the 800 mm side across the trailer. In a 53 ft North American trailer and in ISO containers the counts are in the table above. Euro pallets don't fill a 20 ft or 40 ft container as efficiently as they fill a European trailer.

Frequently asked questions
What are Euro pallet dimensions in inches?
1200 × 800 × 144 mm is about 47.2 × 31.5 × 5.7 in.
How much does a Euro pallet weigh?
EPAL states approximately 25 kg (about 55 lb) for an EPAL 1. Actual weight varies with wood species and moisture.
How much weight can a Euro pallet hold?
EPAL gives a safe working load of 1,500 kg, and up to 5,500 kg on the bottom pallet when loaded pallets are stacked on a solid, level surface. The rating assumes a genuine EPAL pallet in good condition.
Is every 1200x800 pallet an EPAL pallet?
No. Only pallets made by EPAL licensees and marked accordingly are EPAL pallets. Any shop can build a Euro-size 1200 × 800 block pallet, but it is not exchangeable in the EPAL pool.
How many Euro pallets fit in a truck?
33 fit in a standard 13.6 m European semi-trailer, three across with the 800 mm side across the trailer. See the computed table on this page for North American trailers and containers.

- SizesEuropean pallet sizes: Euro, industrial, half, quarter and CP palletsThe standard European pallet is the 1200 × 800 mm Euro pallet (EPAL 1), 144 mm tall. The 1200 × 1000 mm industrial pallet (EPAL 2 and EPAL 3) is the second standard. Retail uses the 800 × 600 half and 600 × 400 quarter pallets, and the chemical industry uses the CP1 to CP9 pallets.
- ComparisonsGMA vs Euro pallet: size, construction and useThe GMA pallet is 48 × 40 in (1219 × 1016 mm), traditionally a 3-stringer, partial 4-way pallet, and is the North American grocery standard. The Euro pallet (EPAL 1) is 1200 × 800 mm (47.2 × 31.5 in), a licensed 9-block, 4-way pallet. Use the one your destination's supply chain runs on.
- StandardsISO 6780: the six international pallet sizesISO 6780:2003 sets principal dimensions and tolerances of flat pallets for intercontinental handling. It recognizes six sizes: 1200 × 800, 1200 × 1000, 1219 × 1016 (48 × 40 in), 1165 × 1165, 1067 × 1067 and 1100 × 1100 mm, and covers openings, chamfers, wings, flatness and distortion.

- Sizes1200 × 1000 pallet: dimensions, weight and specsA 1200 × 1000 mm pallet (47.2 × 39.4 in) is the UK standard pallet and the industrial pallet in Europe and Asia. It is one of the six ISO 6780 sizes. EPAL makes it as the EPAL 2 (162 mm, about 35 kg) and EPAL 3 (144 mm, about 30 kg); CHEP's UK wooden pallet is 162 mm tall and 28 kg.
- Sizes600 × 400 pallet (quarter pallet): dimensions, weight and specsA 600 × 400 mm pallet (23.6 × 15.7 in) is the European quarter pallet: a quarter of a 1200 × 800 Euro pallet. Most are plastic display pallets or wheeled dollies. CHEP's plastic quarter display pallet is 600 × 400 × 145 mm, weighs 2.2 kg and is rated 250 kg safe working load.
- Sizes1140 × 1140 pallet (CP3, CP8, CP9): dimensions, weight and specsA 1140 × 1140 mm pallet (44.9 × 44.9 in) is the square chemical-industry pallet, made as the CP3 (138 mm tall), CP8 and CP9 (156 mm tall). It carries drums, octabins and bulk bags, and two fit side by side inside an ISO shipping container.
- Sizes1100 × 1100 pallet (T11): dimensions, weight and specsA 1100 × 1100 mm pallet (43.3 × 43.3 in) is the Asian standard pallet, known as T11. It is one of the six ISO 6780 sizes and the standard pool pallet in Japan (JIS Z 0601, 1100 × 1100 × 144 mm), and is also a national standard size in Korea and China.
- Sizes1165 × 1165 pallet (Australian standard): dimensions, weight and specsA 1165 × 1165 mm pallet (45.9 × 45.9 in) is the Australian standard pallet, defined by AS 4068 and one of the six ISO 6780 sizes. Pooled CHEP and Loscam versions are hardwood block pallets about 150 mm tall. It was sized for Australian rail containers and fits ISO containers poorly.
- Sizes1200 × 1200 pallet: dimensions, weight and specsA 1200 × 1200 mm pallet (47.2 × 47.2 in) is a square metric pallet used for drums, bulk bags (FIBCs), IBCs and heavy industrial loads. It is not one of the six ISO 6780 sizes. It is roughly the metric counterpart of the 48 × 48 drum pallet, and it is too wide to fit two across an ISO container.
