A custom pallet is any pallet built to your specification instead of picked from stock: a size that fits your product, a deck that suits your load, a build that works with your racking and handling equipment. Custom does not have to mean expensive. Many custom pallets use the same lumber and nails as a standard 48 × 40 GMA pallet, just cut and assembled to different numbers.
pallet.design lets you design the pallet yourself, free, in the browser, then quotes it for you. You get an engineering drawing you own and a price within 2 business days.
Open the 48 × 40 GMA template to start, or read on for what you can change and how ordering works.
What can be customized?
Almost everything. The designer models every setting below, and anything it doesn't model can go in the notes or be described with the "Anything else" type.
Wood pallets
| Feature | Options |
|---|---|
| Size | Any length and width from 6 to 480 in, in inches or millimetres |
| Construction | Stringer, block, skid, plastic lumber |
| Top deck | Number of deckboards, thickness, lead and interior widths, or a plywood/OSB panel |
| Bottom deck | Board count and widths, grouped or even spacing, chamfered leads; perimeter, cruciform or 3-board bottom on block pallets |
| Supports | Stringer count (2 to 18) and size; block size, height and material, including composite blocks |
| Entry | Two-way or partial four-way with notches of any depth, length, position and corner radius; full four-way on block pallets |
| Wings | Flush, single or double wings with any overhang |
| Lumber | Mixed hardwood, oak, southern yellow pine, SPF, Douglas fir or any available; green or kiln-dried; grade from Premium & Btr to recycled; new, remanufactured or combo |
| Fasteners | Helical, annular or plain-shank nails, staples or screws; length, wire gauge and count per joint |
| Export | ISPM 15 heat treatment and marking |
| Marking | Stencil, hot brand, ink-jet, paint or color code, hot stamp, label, with your text |
| Euro pallets | Euro-size builds; EPAL-marked pallets can only be built by EPAL licensees |
Other materials
| Type | What you specify |
|---|---|
| Plastic | Style (rackable, stackable, nestable, hygienic, export, display, drum, spill), deck, base, lip, anti-slip, resin, reinforcement, color, RFID, and the ratings you need |
| Steel and aluminum | Metal and grade, welded or bolted, deck type, base, height, gauge, finish, stacking cups, posts, sides, lifting lugs, drain holes |
| Presswood | Footprint and dynamic load grade |
| Paper and honeycomb | Construction, wall, deck thickness, feet, moisture resistance |
| Slip sheets | Material, caliper, tabs on each side, scoring, coating |
Molded plastic and presswood are made in existing tools, so "custom" means picking the right catalog model, color, marking and options. You state your requirements and the supplier proposes a model that meets them.
How ordering custom pallets works
1. Design it
Start from one of 21 templates, then change what differs. Every edit updates a 3D model, a parts list with board feet, an estimated weight and a fastener count. Design checks flag problems such as boards that don't fit, notches that break the Uniform Standard's geometry rules, or nails too short for the deck. There's no account and no cost. See Getting started.
2. Get the drawing
The Drawing tab produces an ANSI B engineering drawing with top, bottom, front and right views, a parts list and a title block. Print it, save it as a PDF, or share it with a link that carries the whole design. The drawing is yours to use with anyone. See The drawing sheet.
3. Request a quote
Click Request quote, add your name, work email, quantity and delivery ZIP, and send. The request comes to pallet.design. We price your exact design with vetted partner shops and reply with a price within 2 business days. You deal only with us, and the shops never see your contact details. See Requesting a quote.
What information does a custom pallet quote need?
The more of this you give, the tighter the price. The designer has a field for each.
| Group | What to provide |
|---|---|
| The pallet | Size, construction, lumber, fasteners (the drawing covers this) |
| The load | Weight per pallet and type: cartons, bags, drums, machinery, line loads |
| Handling | Forklift, pallet jack, conveyor, AS/RS, sling or crane |
| Storage | Racked or not, rack direction and beam span, floor stack height |
| Use | Reusable or one-way; freezer, outdoor or washdown |
| Compliance | ISPM 15, food contact, fire listing, retailer program, certified rating |
| Commercial | Quantity, annual volume, release frequency, ship-to ZIP, need-by date, target price |
The pallet RFQ checklist explains why each item changes the price, and How to spec a custom pallet walks through the decisions.
How much do custom pallets cost?
Price depends mostly on the board feet of lumber, the lumber species and grade, quantity, and freight. As a 2026 US estimate that moves with lumber markets, a new standard 48 × 40 GMA pallet runs about $10 to $25, and heat treatment adds roughly $1 to $3 per pallet. Custom wood pallets cost more or less than that in proportion to their lumber content and complexity. Plastic catalog pallets typically run about $40 to $200, and fabricated metal pallets more. Large annual volumes price well below one-off orders. See Pallet cost and How to reduce pallet costs.
Lead times and minimum orders
These are typical 2026 ranges, not commitments. Your quote states the lead time and minimum for your order.
| Type | Typical minimum | Typical lead time |
|---|---|---|
| Wood, common sizes | Small runs possible | About 1 to 3 weeks |
| Wood, large custom runs | Depends on shop | About 6 to 12 weeks |
| Plastic, catalog models | Often 50 to 100 | About 2 to 6 weeks |
| Plastic, custom color or molded logo | Often hundreds or more | Longer, production run |
| Metal, fabricated | Often tens | About 3 to 8 weeks |
| Paper and honeycomb | Often hundreds | Usually short |
Lumber availability, heat-treatment capacity and the season all move wood lead times.
Load ratings and certification
The designer doesn't calculate load capacity, and we don't publish a single number for a design. Capacity depends on whether the pallet is racked, floor stacked or on forks, and on the lumber and the load. The rating comes from the manufacturer that builds the pallet. If you need a certified rating, for example a PDS report for Costco or a load test to ASTM D1185, select it under Compliance & marking and it is included in your quote. Pallet load capacity explains static, dynamic and racking ratings.
Start with a template
Most custom pallets are a standard pallet with a few changes. Pick the nearest one: 48 × 40 GMA, 42 × 42, 48 × 48 drum, winged, 48 × 40 block, EUR / EPAL 1 or rackable plastic. For sizes, see US pallet sizes.

Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum order for custom pallets?
It depends on the type. Wood pallets can often be built in small runs, although price per pallet falls with volume. Stock plastic models often start around 50 to 100 pieces. Custom plastic tooling needs far larger volumes. Your quote states the minimum for your design.
How long does it take to get custom pallets?
The quote takes up to 2 business days. As a rough 2026 guide, small wood orders at common sizes take about 1 to 3 weeks and large custom wood runs 6 to 12 weeks. Plastic catalog models take about 2 to 6 weeks and fabricated metal 3 to 8 weeks. The quote gives a lead time for your order.
Do I need a drawing to order?
No. Build one free in the designer from a template, or choose Anything else and describe the pallet in words. The drawing makes the quote faster and more accurate.
Will you give me a load rating?
Load ratings come from the manufacturer that builds the pallet. If you need a certified rating, such as a PDS report for Costco or a load test, select it and it is included in the quote.
Can I deal directly with the pallet manufacturer?
No. pallet.design prices and manages the order with the shop. You get one price and one point of contact, and the shop never receives your contact details.

- GuidesHow much does a pallet cost? New, used, plastic and custom pricesIn the US in 2026, a new 48 × 40 in wood stringer pallet typically costs about $10–25, a used Grade A about $6–14 and a Grade B about $3–8. Heat treatment adds about $1–3. Plastic pallets run roughly $40–200 and metal $150–600 or more. These are estimates that move with lumber, resin and freight markets; get quotes.
- TypesWooden pallets: types, construction, sizes and how to specify themA wooden pallet is a flat transport platform built from lumber deckboards fastened to stringers or blocks. In North America most are 48 × 40 in stringer pallets weighing about 30–70 lb (14–32 kg); in Europe the 1200 × 800 mm EPAL block pallet dominates. Wood must be ISPM 15 treated for most export.
