Aluminum pallets fill a narrow but demanding niche: operations that need a metal pallet's strength, heat tolerance and cleanability without the weight and rust risk of carbon steel.
What is an aluminum pallet?
An aluminum pallet is a pallet fabricated from aluminum: a deck of plate, perforated or ventilated sheet on a frame of extrusions, with a base that gives 4-way entry. For hygienic use it is seal-welded, meaning every seam is fully welded so there are no gaps for dirt or water. See steel pallet for the carbon and stainless steel alternatives.

Where are aluminum pallets used?
- Food processing and washdown areas; see food and beverage
- Pharmaceutical production and cleanrooms; see pharmaceutical
- Hot processes: ovens, autoclaves, sterilisers, where plastic would soften
- Wet or corrosive environments where carbon steel would rust
- Closed loops where a metal pallet must be handled manually or by light equipment, and steel would be too heavy
Pros and limits
| Pros | Limits |
|---|---|
| Does not rust; washable | Among the most expensive pallet types |
| Lighter than steel | Less stiff than steel per section; dents more easily |
| Non-combustible, heat tolerant | Some cleaning chemicals attack aluminum |
| No creep under long-term load (unlike plastic) | Welding and repair need specialist shops |
| ISPM 15 exempt | Custom designs have longer lead times than catalog pallets |
Capacity and weight
One published seal-welded 40 × 48 in aluminum pallet is rated 6,000 lb (2,722 kg) dynamic and 30,000 lb (13,608 kg) static. Aluminum is roughly one third the density of steel, so aluminum pallets are generally lighter than steel pallets of similar capacity; weight still varies widely with deck thickness and base design. Racking ratings, where offered, depend on beam span and orientation. The fabricator's rating is authoritative. See pallet load capacity.

ISPM 15
Exempt. ISPM 15 covers only wood packaging.
Food and hygiene notes
Some vendors describe their aluminum pallets as "FDA/USDA approved". As with plastic, what that usually means is that materials and design are acceptable for food environments; ask for the documentation that applies to your plant and auditor. See food-grade pallets.
What drives the cost?
- Aluminum weight and alloy
- Seal welding (more weld length than a stitch-welded frame)
- Deck type and base design
- Accessories and finish
- Quantity and freight
As a 2026 US estimate, catalog aluminum pallets in 40 × 48 in class sizes have been listed at a few hundred dollars each, roughly $300–600, and custom fabrications cost more.

Frequently asked questions
How much weight can an aluminum pallet hold?
One published 40 × 48 in seal-welded aluminum pallet is rated 6,000 lb dynamic and 30,000 lb static. Custom designs are rated by the fabricator for your load and support.
Are aluminum pallets lighter than steel?
Aluminum is about one third the density of steel, so an aluminum pallet is usually lighter than a steel pallet of similar capacity, though it needs thicker sections to match steel's stiffness.
Why use aluminum instead of plastic in food plants?
Aluminum tolerates higher wash and oven temperatures, does not creep under long-term load, and is non-combustible. Plastic is cheaper and lighter for most uses.
Do aluminum pallets rust?
Aluminum does not rust. It forms a protective oxide layer, though some cleaning chemicals, especially strong alkalis, can attack it. Check your sanitiser's compatibility.

- TypesSteel pallet: welded, galvanized and built for heavy loopsA steel pallet is fabricated from carbon or stainless steel sheet, channel and tube, usually welded and hot-dip galvanized or powder coated. It carries heavy loads, lasts for years outdoors and in hot processes, does not burn and is ISPM 15 exempt. Steel pallets weigh roughly 50–150 lb (23–68 kg).
- TypesHygienic plastic pallet: closed decks for food and pharmaA hygienic plastic pallet has a closed, smooth top deck and a closed bottom, with no hollow cavities where dirt, water or bacteria can collect. It is made from virgin HDPE or PP, designed to be washed, and used in food processing, meat, dairy, bakery and pharmaceutical plants.
- ComparisonsMetal vs plastic pallets: steel, aluminum and plastic comparedChoose a metal pallet (steel or aluminum) for very heavy, hot, sharp or long-life loads, fire-sensitive storage, or when you need a custom fabricated size in small quantities. Choose plastic for lighter closed-loop handling, lower price, lower tare weight and standard footprints.
- IndustriesPallets for pharmaceutical and healthcare productsPharmaceutical plants keep wood out of cleanrooms and GMP areas and use hygienic plastic (closed deck, washable) or aluminum there. Finished goods ship on 48 × 40 in or 1200 × 800 mm wood or plastic pallets to meet distribution, cold-chain and customer rules. The quality system, not a law, sets the material.
- IndustriesPallets for food and beverage manufacturingFood companies run two pallet systems: hygienic plastic or aluminum inside wet and open-product areas, and 48 × 40 in wood or pooled pallets for cased goods. The FDA Sanitary Transportation rule requires suitable, cleanable, sanitary pallets but does not mandate a material.
- GuidesFood-grade pallets: what the term means and how to specify oneThere is no FDA certification for a food-grade pallet. The term means a clean, dry, uncontaminated pallet: new or top-grade wood, kiln-dried and heat-treated (never methyl bromide), or virgin food-contact plastic. FSMA requires transport equipment that will not make food unsafe.
- TypesExport pallets: ISPM 15, container sizes and material choicesAn export pallet must meet ISPM 15 (heat-treated and marked wood, or an exempt material such as plastic, presswood, paper or metal), fit the container and the consignee's equipment, and usually be cheap enough to lose. Common choices are HT wood, 45 × 45 in or 1200 × 1000 mm footprints, and nestable plastic.
More in Other materials
- TypesPresswood pallet: molded wood-fibre, nestable and ISPM 15 exemptA presswood pallet is a one-piece pallet molded from wood fibre and resin under heat and pressure. It has no nails, nests about 2.5:1 to 4:1, weighs roughly 25–35 lb (11–16 kg) in 48 × 40 class sizes and is ISPM 15 exempt as processed wood. It comes in fixed sizes and is not rackable.
- TypesMetal pallets: steel, stainless and aluminum comparedMetal pallets are fabricated from carbon steel, stainless steel or aluminum, usually welded. They carry heavy or hot loads, last for years in returnable loops, do not burn and are exempt from ISPM 15. Carbon steel is the strongest and cheapest metal, stainless and aluminum resist corrosion, and aluminum is the lightest.
- TypesPaper pallet: corrugated and honeycomb pallets explainedA paper pallet is made entirely from paper products: a corrugated or honeycomb paperboard deck on feet of paper tubes, honeycomb blocks or folded board. It is very light (from about 4 kg, 9 lb), recyclable and ISPM 15 exempt. Ratings reach about 750–1,000 kg, and humidity reduces strength.
- TypesSlip sheet: the thin pallet alternative, sizes, tabs and materialsA slip sheet is a thin sheet of solid fiberboard, corrugated board or plastic used under a unit load instead of a pallet. A push-pull lift truck attachment grips its tab and pulls the load onto its platens. Sheets for a 40 × 48 in load are commonly 43 × 51 or 44 × 52 in with 3–4 in tabs.
- TypesPallet collar: hinged wooden frames that turn a pallet into a boxA pallet collar is a frame of four boards joined by metal hinges that sits on a pallet to form an open box. Collars stack to build height and fold flat when empty. The common European collar fits a 1200 × 800 mm pallet, is 200 mm (7.9 in) tall and has 4 or 6 galvanized hinges.
- TypesPallet box: bulk bins, gaylords and box pallets explainedA pallet box is a bulk container with a pallet-sized base that forklifts and pallet jacks can handle: a wooden bin, a corrugated gaylord on a pallet, a collapsible plastic bulk container or a steel box pallet. The EPAL box pallet has a 1200 × 800 mm inner base, is 970 mm tall and carries 1,500 kg.
