Steel pallet: welded, galvanized and built for heavy loops

Summary

A steel pallet is fabricated from carbon or stainless steel sheet, channel and tube, usually welded and hot-dip galvanized or powder coated. It carries heavy loads, lasts for years outdoors and in hot processes, does not burn and is ISPM 15 exempt. Steel pallets weigh roughly 50–150 lb (23–68 kg).

Steel pallets are for the loads other pallets cannot survive: heavy castings and coils, parts coming out of ovens, returnable racks in automotive loops and equipment stored outdoors for years. Unlike plastic, they are usually fabricated to order, so custom sizes are realistic.

What is a steel pallet?

A steel pallet is a pallet built from steel components: a deck of sheet, corrugated sheet, checker plate, grating or mesh on a frame of formed channels or tubes, standing on runners, legs or channels that give fork entry. Carbon steel is protected by galvanizing, powder coat or paint; stainless steel (304 or 316) is used where corrosion or hygiene matters.

How is a steel pallet built?

The pallet.design steel template is a 48 × 40 in welded, hot-dip galvanized pallet with channel runners:

Feature Template value Metric
Footprint 48 × 40 in 1219 × 1016 mm
Height 5-1/2 in 140 mm
Construction Welded
Deck Solid
Base Runners
Gauge 12 ga about 2.7 mm
Finish Hot-dip galvanized

Construction options

Option Choices
Material Carbon steel, stainless 304, stainless 316
Construction Welded, seal-welded (fully sealed, washable), bolted or knock-down
Deck Solid, corrugated, checker plate, perforated, expanded metal, wire mesh, grating
Frame Channel, tube, angle
Base Runners, channels, legs with stacking cups, perimeter
Gauge 16 ga (light), 14 ga (medium), 12 ga (heavy), or plate
Finish Hot-dip galvanized, electro-galvanized, powder coat, paint, none (stainless)
Accessories Removable posts, sides, lifting lugs, stacking cups, drain holes

With posts and sides added, a steel pallet becomes a stillage or cage; see pallet box.

Where are steel pallets used?

  • Automotive interplant loops and returnable containers; see automotive
  • Coils, dies, castings and machined parts; see metals and machinery
  • Heat treating and ovens, where plastic would melt and wood would burn
  • Outdoor storage of equipment and materials
  • Fire-sensitive storage
  • Export where the pallet returns, or where ISPM 15 exemption matters

Pros and limits

Pros Limits
Very high capacity and stiffness Heavy: adds freight weight
Long life; does not rot or absorb liquids Several times the price of wood
Does not burn Can bend under fork impact, and damaged decks need a fabricator
ISPM 15 exempt Slippery decks without a textured finish
Custom sizes at low volumes Carbon steel rusts if the coating is damaged

Capacity and weight

Published examples show the range:

Example Static Dynamic Racking Weight
Galvanized steel pallet 8,000 lb (3,629 kg) 4,000 lb (1,814 kg) 2,200 lb (998 kg) unsupported model dependent
Steel pallet (US maker) 5,800 lb (2,631 kg) rated model dependent
1000 × 1200 × 120 mm galvanized 3.5 t (7,716 lb) about 46 kg (101 lb)

Most 48 × 40 class steel pallets weigh roughly 50–150 lb (23–68 kg). For a custom design, the fabricator rates the pallet to your load, support and rack span. See pallet load capacity.

ISPM 15

Exempt. ISPM 15 applies only to wood packaging. If wooden runners or deck inserts are added, those parts need treatment.

What drives the cost?

  • Steel weight: gauge multiplied by area, plus frame members
  • Material: stainless costs much more than carbon steel
  • Welding length and complexity
  • Finish: hot-dip galvanizing is a separate batch process
  • Accessories: posts, sides, lifting lugs, stacking cups
  • Quantity (often tens, not thousands) and freight

As a 2026 US estimate, metal pallets cost roughly $150–600 or more each, depending on size, material and features. Lead times for fabricated designs are typically several weeks.

Frequently asked questions

How much weight can a steel pallet hold?

It depends on the design. Published examples include a galvanized pallet rated 8,000 lb static, 4,000 lb dynamic and 2,200 lb in racks, and a 1000 × 1200 mm pallet rated 3.5 t static. Fabricators rate custom designs to your load.

How much does a steel pallet weigh?

Roughly 50–150 lb (23–68 kg) for 48 × 40 in class sizes. One published 1000 × 1200 × 120 mm galvanized pallet weighs about 46 kg (101 lb).

Do steel pallets need ISPM 15 treatment?

No. ISPM 15 applies to solid wood packaging only. Steel pallets are exempt.

Galvanized or powder coated?

Hot-dip galvanizing protects against rust outdoors and in wet areas and survives scratches better. Powder coat gives a colour finish and is common indoors. Stainless steel needs neither.

When is a steel pallet worth the cost?

When a closed loop will run for years, the load is heavy or hot, or fire, cleanliness or durability rule out wood and plastic. Over enough trips the cost per trip can fall below wood.
