MIBANT (nail bend test)

Also called: Morgan Impact Bend Angle Nail Tester, MIBANT angle, nail bend test

Definition

MIBANT (Morgan Impact Bend Angle Nail Tester) is an impact-bend test for nail stiffness, run under ASTM F680. A weight strikes a clamped nail and the resulting bend angle is recorded; a lower angle means a stiffer, better nail.

In depth: ASTM F680: test methods for nails (including the MIBANT test)

MIBANT measures how far a nail bends under a standard impact. Stiff nails keep pallet joints tight when boards are hit or the pallet racks, so the MIBANT angle is a direct quality check on pallet nail steel and wire size.

Quality bands (trade guidance)

MIBANT angle Rating
8 to 24° Excellent
25 to 35° Good
37 to 46° Acceptable
Above that Poor for deck nails

Not more than 8% of nails tested may show shank failure. Example acceptable reusable-pallet nails in the Uniform Standard (2012) Annex G have MIBANT values of 41 to 52°. Real PDS sheets show 21, 28 and 36° for quality deck nails and 108° for a soft clinching mat nail.

Converting to bending yield

Uniform Standard (2012) Annex F converts MIBANT to bending yield strength:

  • My = 1219.1 × MIBANT^−0.9653 (lbf·in)
  • Fyb = My ÷ (Ds³ ÷ 6), where Ds is wire diameter

The minimum Fyb is 100 ksi (690 MPa).

On a spec sheet

PDS lists "MIBANT Angle" (or bending yield strength) in the fastener table. Buyers who care about durability can ask for MIBANT certificates from the nail supplier. See ASTM F680.
