White wood

Also called: whitewood, white wood pallet, whitewood pallet

Definition

White wood (whitewood) is the pallet trade's name for generic, unpainted wood pallets, usually 48 × 40 in GMA-style stringer pallets, that users buy, own and trade, as opposed to painted pooled pallets. In lumber, whitewood also names a group of light-colored softwoods such as spruce and fir.

In depth: White wood pallets: what the term means and when to use them

"White wood" distinguishes owned pallets from pooled ones, which are painted in the pool operator's color. A white-wood pallet can be new or recycled, and is usually a GMA-style stringer pallet.

Two meanings

Context Meaning
Pallet trade Unpainted, non-pooled pallet owned by the user
Lumber Light-colored softwoods, such as spruce, fir and some pines. PDS includes a European "whitewood" species class (class 35)

Why it matters

  • Ownership: white-wood pallets are bought outright, so the user controls design, size and reuse.
  • Market: most used and recycled pallets traded in the US are white-wood GMA-style pallets, sold by grade.
  • Retailer rules: some retailers require pooled pallets (Costco, for example) and accept white-wood only by exception. Others accept white-wood pallets to a stated specification.

On a spec sheet or RFQ

"White wood" alone does not specify a pallet. Give the size, construction, new or recycled, the grade if recycled, the species group, and any treatment. See the white-wood pallet type page for typical specs.

Common confusions

White wood does not mean the wood species is white or that the pallet is new. A white-wood pallet can be built from hardwood.
