Returnable pallet

Also called: reusable pallet, multiple-use pallet, multi-trip pallet

Definition

A returnable pallet is a pallet designed to make many trips and be sent back to its owner after each one, as in a closed loop between a supplier and a plant. It is built for durability, often from higher-grade wood, plastic or metal, and judged on cost per trip.

In depth: Plastic pallets: types, materials, load ratings and how to buy them

In the Uniform Standard's use classes, a returnable pallet is Reusable (older term: Multiple-Use). It is designed to survive repeated handling and to be repaired.

What makes it different

Factor Returnable design
Lumber Higher grade, denser species, thicker lead boards
Fasteners Better nails with higher withdrawal resistance, such as helically threaded nails
Construction Often block or heavy stringer; plastic and metal common
Evaluation Durability in cycles, repairability, cost per trip
Identification Branding, color, RFID or bar codes so pallets come back

Why it matters

A returnable pallet costs more to buy, so it only pays if it actually returns. The return rate, return freight, and repair costs decide whether it beats a one-way pallet. Automotive and other manufacturing supply chains commonly run returnable pallets and containers in a closed loop.

On a spec sheet or RFQ

State "reusable", the expected trips, handling severity, repair policy, and marking for ownership ("property of", logo, part number). For plastic, give temperature range and washing requirements.

Common confusions

A pallet that is merely reused (for example a used pallet resold) is not necessarily returnable. Returnable means it is designed and managed to come back.
