Pallet inverter

Also called: load inverter, pallet changer, pallet exchanger

Definition

A pallet inverter is a machine that clamps a unit load and rotates it, often through 180 degrees, so the pallet underneath can be removed and replaced without restacking the product by hand.

In depth: Food-grade pallets: what the term means and how to specify one

A pallet inverter moves the load, not the pallet. The machine clamps the load between two platens, rotates it, the old pallet is removed, a new one is placed, and the load is returned upright.

Common uses

Use Example
Hygiene zones Moving product from wood pallets onto hygienic plastic pallets at a food or pharmaceutical clean-area boundary
Damaged pallets Replacing a broken pallet without hand restacking
Pallet type change Swapping a pooled or customer-owned pallet for a one-way pallet before export
Product retrieval Reaching the bottom layer of a load

Why it matters for pallet design

When product changes pallets at a site boundary, the pallet on each side can be designed for its own job. The inbound pallet does not need to meet clean-room rules, and the internal pallet does not need to survive the outside supply chain. Inverters work best with stable, square unit loads that tolerate clamping and rotation.

On a spec sheet or RFQ

If a load passes through an inverter, say so. Mention clamping pressure limits for fragile packaging and the pallet type on each side of the transfer.

Common confusions

A pallet inverter is not a pallet dispenser, which handles empty pallets. It is also not pallet exchange, which is a commercial arrangement between trading partners.
