How many bags of concrete are on a pallet?

Summary

A full pallet of bagged concrete mix typically holds 42 bags of 80 lb, 56 bags of 60 lb, 64 bags of 50 lb or 80 bags of 40 lb. Each is about 3,200–3,360 lb of product (roughly 1.5 t) and yields about 0.9 cubic yards of concrete.

Bagged concrete is palletized by weight, not by bag count. Whatever the bag size, a full pallet from the major US brands carries roughly 3,200–3,360 lb (1,450–1,525 kg) of mix, so the count per pallet is that weight divided by the bag weight.

How many bags of concrete are on a pallet?

The typical US counts, as listed by Quikrete and Sakrete dealers and home centers, are:

Bag size Bags per pallet Product weight Yield per bag Concrete per pallet
40 lb (18.1 kg) 80 3,200 lb (1,451 kg) 0.30 cu ft 24.0 cu ft (0.89 yd³)
50 lb (22.7 kg) 64 3,200 lb (1,451 kg) 0.375 cu ft 24.0 cu ft (0.89 yd³)
60 lb (27.2 kg) 56 3,360 lb (1,524 kg) 0.45 cu ft 25.2 cu ft (0.93 yd³)
80 lb (36.3 kg) 42 3,360 lb (1,524 kg) 0.60 cu ft 25.2 cu ft (0.93 yd³)

Yields are from the Quikrete Concrete Mix (No. 1101) data sheet. Other products in the same bag size (fast-setting mix, fence-post mix, 5000 psi mix, mortar, sand) are often stacked to a different count. For example, some 50 lb fence-post mix pallets carry 56 bags rather than 64. The pallet quantity on your supplier's quote is the authoritative number.

How much does a pallet of concrete weigh?

A full pallet weighs about 3,250–3,420 lb (1,475–1,550 kg) including the pallet. That is the product weight in the table plus the pallet itself, which is usually 30–60 lb for a hardwood stringer pallet (see how much a pallet weighs). Stretch wrap and a top cap add a few pounds.

Warning

A full pallet of concrete is heavier than most people expect. It exceeds the payload rating of most half-ton pickups and many single-axle utility trailers. Check the payload on the Tire and Loading Information label on your truck's driver-side door jamb and the GVWR plate on the trailer before you load.

Where you put it matters too. A 48 × 40 in footprint is 13.3 sq ft, so a 3,400 lb pallet presses about 255 lb per sq ft over that area. That is far above the uniform live loads residential floors and decks are designed for. Set it on a slab, driveway or gravel, and ask the yard to drop it where you will use it.

What decides the count per pallet

  • Weight target. Yards and carriers cap pallets at a weight a forklift, a delivery truck boom or a store rack can handle. About 3,300 lb is the common target for bagged cement products.
  • Bag footprint and layer pattern. Bags are interlocked in layers so the stack stays stable. The count per layer times the number of layers is the Ti-Hi. A bag that is slightly longer or flatter changes the pattern and the count.
  • Pallet size. Most bagged cement ships on 48 × 40 in or similar pallets. Some producers use their own footprint. See 48 × 40 pallet.
  • Half pallets. Some sellers ship half loads (for example 32 × 50 lb) for smaller jobs.

How to work out your own count

If you are palletizing bags yourself, use the cases per pallet calculator with the filled bag's length, width and height and your weight limit. Bags bulge, so measure a filled bag lying flat, not the empty bag. Then check the total against the pallet's rated capacity: a bag load is spread fairly evenly, but a light one-way pallet may not be rated for 3,400 lb. See pallet load capacity.

To go the other way, from volume to bags:

  1. Work out the pour volume in cubic feet (length × width × depth in feet).
  2. Divide by the bag yield (0.60 for 80 lb, 0.45 for 60 lb).
  3. Add 5–10% for waste and uneven subgrade.
  4. Divide by the bags per pallet from the table.

Pallet deposits and returns

Bagged cement and concrete often ship on heavy hardwood pallets that the yard wants back. Many building supply dealers charge a refundable pallet deposit and credit it when you return the pallet in reusable condition. Home centers handle it differently by store. Ask about the deposit and the return window when you order, and keep the receipt.

Frequently asked questions

How many cubic yards is a pallet of 80 lb concrete bags?

42 bags × 0.60 cu ft is 25.2 cu ft, or about 0.93 cubic yards. You need about 45 bags of 80 lb mix for one full cubic yard.

Can a half-ton pickup carry a pallet of concrete?

Usually not. A full pallet is about 3,300–3,400 lb with the pallet, which is more than the rated payload of most half-ton pickups. Check the payload on your door-jamb label and take a partial pallet if needed.

Is there a deposit on concrete pallets?

Often. Many building supply yards add a refundable pallet deposit to bagged cement and concrete orders. The amount and return terms vary by store, so ask when you order.

Why do 40 lb and 80 lb pallets weigh about the same?

Suppliers build each pallet to a target weight of roughly 3,200–3,400 lb. Smaller bags simply mean more bags per pallet.
