How many bags of wood pellets are on a pallet?

Summary

A standard pallet of heating pellets is 50 bags of 40 lb, exactly one short ton (2,000 lb, 907 kg) of pellets, or about 2,040–2,100 lb with the pallet and wrap. Some dealers also sell 1.5-ton pallets of 75 bags (3,000 lb).

Wood heating pellets are sold by the ton, and the industry packs them to make that easy: 40 lb bags, 50 bags to a pallet, one ton per pallet. Pellet mills, farm stores and home centers all use this format, which is why "a pallet" and "a ton" of pellets are used interchangeably.

How many bags of pellets are on a pallet?

Pallet Bag size Bags Pellets With pallet (est.)
Standard ton 40 lb (18.1 kg) 50 2,000 lb (907 kg) about 2,040–2,100 lb (925–950 kg)
1.5-ton pallet (some dealers) 40 lb 75 3,000 lb (1,361 kg) about 3,040–3,100 lb (1,380–1,405 kg)
Half-ton or partial 40 lb 25 or as ordered 1,000 lb (454 kg) about 1,040–1,100 lb

The 50-bag, one-ton pallet is listed by multiple US pellet producers and retailers. Some dealers sell 75-bag, 1.5-ton pallets. Bagged grilling and smoker pellets are a different product, usually in 20 lb bags or smaller, and are palletized differently. Your dealer's pallet quantity is authoritative. The pallet itself adds about 30–60 lb, and stretch wrap and a top sheet a few more; see how much a pallet weighs.

What decides the count

  • The ton. Sellers want a pallet to equal a round unit of fuel, so the weight is fixed at 2,000 lb and the bag count follows from bag size.
  • Bag footprint and stacking. A 40 lb pellet bag is flat and firm, so it stacks in stable interlocked layers. See Ti-Hi.
  • Pallet capacity. The pallet has to carry a ton evenly distributed, plus handling by forklift and truck. See pallet load capacity.
  • Weather protection. Most mills stretch-wrap and top-cover each pallet. See stretch wrapping pallets.

Can your truck, trailer or floor take it?

At about 2,050 lb, a one-ton pallet exceeds the rated payload of many half-ton pickups. Check the payload on the Tire and Loading Information label on the driver's door jamb, not the "half-ton" name. Three-quarter-ton and one-ton trucks, or a trailer rated for the load, are the usual choice. Many dealers deliver with a truck-mounted forklift.

For storage, the pallet puts about 155 lb per sq ft on a 48 × 40 in footprint. That is fine on a garage or basement slab. On a wood-framed floor or deck it is far above typical residential design loads, so unload the bags and spread them out, or keep the pallet on concrete.

How to calculate it yourself

For a winter's supply, estimate tons from last season's use or the stove maker's burn rate, then order that many pallets. If you are palletizing pellets or similar bagged goods, measure a filled bag lying flat and use the cases per pallet calculator with a weight cap of 2,000 lb.

Pallet deposits

Pellet pallets are often good hardwood pallets that dealers reuse. Some pellet dealers and hardware stores charge a refundable pallet deposit and credit it when you bring the empty pallet back within their return window. Ask before you buy.

Frequently asked questions

How many bags of pellets are in a ton?

50 bags of 40 lb make one short ton (2,000 lb). With 20 lb bags it would be 100 bags.

How long does a ton of pellets last?

It depends on the stove, the house and the climate. Many households burn a few tons per heating season; your stove's burn rate at typical settings is the best guide.

Can I store a pallet of pellets outside?

Only briefly and covered. Pellets swell and crumble when they get wet, and the bags are not waterproof once punctured. A garage, shed or basement is better.
