How many bags of soil are on a pallet?

Summary

Soil pallets vary by bag size: about 80–85 bags of 0.75 cu ft garden soil or topsoil (60–64 cu ft), about 50 bags of 1.5 cu ft raised-bed soil (75 cu ft) and 39–48 bags of 2 cu ft potting mix (78–96 cu ft). Topsoil pallets are the heaviest, often well over 2,000 lb.

Bagged soil comes in several bag sizes, and each product is palletized separately, so there is no single count. Denser products (topsoil) hit a weight limit; lighter ones (potting mix) hit a height or volume limit.

How many bags of soil are on a pallet?

These are published pallet counts from US home-center listings in 2026. Other brands and regions differ.

Product (example) Bag size Bags per pallet Volume per pallet
Garden soil (Miracle-Gro All Purpose) 0.75 cu ft 85 63.75 cu ft (2.4 yd³, 1.81 m³)
Topsoil (Scotts Premium) 0.75 cu ft 80 60 cu ft (2.2 yd³, 1.70 m³)
Screened topsoil loam (regional brand) 0.75 cu ft 49 36.75 cu ft (1.4 yd³, 1.04 m³)
Raised bed soil (Miracle-Gro Organic) 1.5 cu ft 50 75 cu ft (2.8 yd³, 2.12 m³)
Potting mix (Miracle-Gro) 2 cu ft 39 78 cu ft (2.9 yd³, 2.21 m³)
Potting mix (Espoma, FoxFarm) 2 cu ft 48 96 cu ft (3.6 yd³, 2.72 m³)

The retailer's or supplier's pallet quantity for your exact product is authoritative. The low count on some heavy topsoil pallets reflects bag weight, not bag size.

How much does a pallet of soil weigh?

It depends almost entirely on the product and its moisture. The net weight or volume is printed on the bag; multiply the filled-bag weight by the count and add 30–50 lb for the pallet. As rough estimates:

  • Topsoil and garden soil pallets are commonly in the 2,000–3,500 lb range. Mineral soil is heavy, and moisture from outdoor storage adds more.
  • Potting mix and raised-bed soil pallets are much lighter, often around 1,000–2,000 lb, because peat, coir and bark are light.

These ranges are estimates, not published figures. See how much a pallet weighs. A topsoil pallet is likely to exceed a half-ton pickup's rated payload; check the door-jamb label before loading.

What decides the count

  • Bag weight. Topsoil pallets are capped by weight, so bags per pallet fall as bags get heavier.
  • Bag volume and shape. Larger bags need more space per layer.
  • Stack stability. Soft, lofty bags (potting mix) are stacked lower to stay stable.
  • Pallet size. Most garden products ship on 48 × 40 in or similar pallets. See 48 × 40 pallet.

How to calculate what you need

  1. Work out the volume: area in square feet × depth in feet. A 4 × 8 ft raised bed filled 10 in deep is 32 × 0.83 = 26.7 cu ft.
  2. Divide by the bag size: 26.7 ÷ 1.5 = 18 bags of 1.5 cu ft soil.
  3. Compare with the pallet count to decide between loose bags and a full pallet.

Bagged soil settles, so add 10–15% for raised beds. To plan your own pallet of bags, the cases per pallet calculator works with bag dimensions and a weight cap.

Pallet deposits and returns

Most home-center soil pallets are one-way pallets with no deposit. Landscape suppliers that deliver full pallets sometimes charge a refundable pallet deposit. Ask at the time of order.

Frequently asked questions

How many bags of topsoil make a cubic yard?

A cubic yard is 27 cu ft, so it takes 36 bags of 0.75 cu ft topsoil or 13.5 bags of 2 cu ft soil.

Why is a pallet of topsoil so much heavier than potting mix?

Topsoil is mostly mineral soil and holds water. Potting mix is mostly peat, coir, bark and perlite, which are far lighter per cubic foot.

Is it cheaper to buy soil in bulk?

For raised beds or grading that need more than a couple of cubic yards, bulk soil from a landscape yard usually costs less per cubic yard than bags.
