How many sheets of drywall are in a unit or pallet?

Summary

Drywall is shipped in units (also called lifts) of two-sheet bundles stacked on spacers, usually several dozen sheets per unit; the count varies by plant, thickness and length. A 4 × 8 ft sheet weighs about 40 lb (1/2 in lightweight), about 51 lb (1/2 in regular) or about 70 lb (5/8 in Type X).

Gypsum board is rarely shipped on a standard pallet. Plants tape sheets together in pairs, stack the pairs into a unit (or "lift") on spacers called dunnage or bunks, and band it so a forklift or boom truck can pick it. The number of sheets per unit varies by plant, thickness and length, so the unit count is a question for your supplier. What is fixed is the weight per sheet.

How much does a sheet of drywall weigh?

Panel Weight per sq ft 4 × 8 ft sheet 4 × 12 ft sheet Sheets per 2,000 lb
3/8 in regular about 1.4 lb (6.8 kg/m²) about 45 lb (20 kg) about 67 lb (30 kg) 44 (4 × 8)
1/2 in lightweight (USG UltraLight) 1.25 lb (6.1 kg/m²) 40 lb (18 kg) 60 lb (27 kg) 50 (4 × 8)
1/2 in regular weight about 1.6–1.7 lb about 51–54 lb (23–25 kg) about 77–82 lb 37–39 (4 × 8)
5/8 in Type X about 2.2 lb (10.7 kg/m²) about 70 lb (32 kg) about 106 lb (48 kg) 28 (4 × 8)

Weights per square foot are nominal values from USG data (3/8 in regular, 1/2 in UltraLight, 5/8 in Firecode X) and a typical figure for regular-weight 1/2 in board, which varies by manufacturer. The last column shows how many sheets make up one short ton, which is a practical way to size a load for a truck or floor.

How many sheets are in a unit?

A full unit typically holds several dozen sheets. The exact count depends on:

  • Thickness. Thinner board stacks more sheets in the same height.
  • Length. 4 × 12 ft units may carry fewer sheets than 4 × 8 ft to limit weight.
  • Plant and product. Each plant sets its own unit height and weight.
  • Supplier breakdown. Dealers often break units and deliver by the sheet count you order.

Because we could not verify one standard unit count across manufacturers, we do not state one here. Ask your supplier for the sheets per unit and the unit weight, then use the table above to check it: for example, 48 sheets of 1/2 in lightweight 4 × 8 is about 1,920 lb, while 48 sheets of 5/8 in 4 × 12 is about 5,100 lb.

Can a floor or truck take a unit of drywall?

A unit is a dense, concentrated load. A 4 × 12 ft unit weighing 3,000 lb puts about 63 lb per sq ft across its 48 sq ft footprint, and a 4 × 8 unit of the same weight about 94 lb per sq ft, before counting any other stacked materials. Framed floors in new construction are designed for their occupancy loads, not for a stack of building materials in one bay. Suppliers usually deliver board by boom into the rooms where it will be hung, spread in smaller stacks, and lean or lay it near bearing walls. For large deliveries to upper floors, check with the builder or structural engineer.

For a pickup, count sheets against the payload on the door-jamb label: a half-ton rated for about 1,500 lb carries roughly 28 sheets of 1/2 in regular 4 × 8 or 21 sheets of 5/8 in 4 × 8. Many pickups have a bed shorter than 8 ft, so long sheets also need support and tie-downs.

How to calculate what you need

  1. Add up wall and ceiling area in square feet and subtract large openings.
  2. Divide by the sheet area (32 sq ft for 4 × 8, 48 sq ft for 4 × 12).
  3. Add about 10–15% for cuts and waste.
  4. Multiply by the sheet weight from the table to plan delivery and staging.

If you ship cut panels, joint compound or accessories on pallets, the cases per pallet calculator lays out the load and the pallet weight guide gives the pallet's own weight for the gross.

Returns and dunnage

Drywall units usually sit on disposable spacers rather than returnable pallets, so deposits are less common than with block or pavers. Some suppliers deliver on pallets for small orders. Ask about delivery method and any pallet charges when you order.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a sheet of 5/8 drywall weigh?

USG lists Sheetrock Firecode X 5/8 in panels at about 2.2 lb per sq ft, so a 4 × 8 ft sheet is about 70 lb and a 4 × 12 ft sheet about 106 lb.

How much does a sheet of 1/2 in drywall weigh?

About 40 lb for a 4 × 8 ft lightweight panel (USG UltraLight is rated 1.25 lb per sq ft) and roughly 50–55 lb for regular-weight 1/2 in board.

Why does drywall come in pairs?

Plants tape two sheets face to face at the ends to protect the finished faces and edges. Suppliers count and price by the sheet, and the pair is the handling unit.
