How many bundles of shingles are on a pallet?

Summary

A pallet of asphalt roofing shingles typically holds 36 to 56 bundles. At 3 bundles per square (100 sq ft) that is 12 to about 18.7 squares. Architectural shingle pallets commonly weigh roughly 2,400–4,500 lb, so they are usually delivered by boom truck straight to the roof.

Asphalt shingles are sold by the bundle and estimated by the square (100 sq ft of roof). A pallet holds a fixed number of bundles set by the manufacturer, and that number varies by product and by how the order ships.

How many bundles of shingles are on a pallet?

Pallet (examples) Bundles Squares (at 3 bundles/sq) Roof area Weight (est.)
Smaller shipment pallet 36 12 1,200 sq ft (111 m²) about 2,400–2,900 lb
Architectural pallet (secondary sources) 42 14 1,400 sq ft (130 m²) about 2,800–3,400 lb
Full pallet (GAF, one shipment type) 52 17.3 1,733 sq ft (161 m²) about 3,400–4,200 lb
Distributor full pallet listing 56 18.7 1,867 sq ft (173 m²) about 3,700–4,500 lb

GAF's published EPD for Timberline HDZ states each pallet contains "52 or 36 bundles depending on the type of shipment". A distributor lists another architectural line at 56 bundles per pallet, and secondary sources cite 39 and 42 for other lines. Weights are estimates using roughly 65–80 lb per architectural bundle plus about 40–60 lb for the pallet. 3-tab and lighter products weigh less; designer and impact-resistant shingles often weigh more and may need 4 or more bundles per square. Use the manufacturer's bundles per square, bundles per pallet and weight per square for your product.

What decides the count

  • Bundle weight. Pallets are sized to a weight that a boom truck, forklift and the pallet itself can handle.
  • Bundle size. Shingle bundles are long and flat, so manufacturers often use pallets sized to the bundle rather than the 48 × 40 in grocery pallet. The 48 × 36 in size is one footprint associated with shingles. See 48 × 36 pallet.
  • Shipment type. A manufacturer may build full pallets for distributor warehouses and smaller pallets for other channels.
  • Bundles per square. Heavier products need more bundles per square, so a pallet covers fewer squares.

How much does a pallet of shingles weigh?

Most full pallets of architectural shingles weigh somewhere around 2,400–4,500 lb (1,090–2,040 kg). That is more than a half-ton pickup is rated for and more than many single-axle trailers carry. Check the payload label on the door jamb and the trailer GVWR.

On a roof, a full pallet in one spot is a heavy concentrated load. Roofing suppliers usually lift bundles onto the roof with a boom and spread them along the ridge over rafters or trusses. For older framing or low-slope roofs, ask a qualified professional before loading. See how much a pallet weighs.

How to work out what you need

  1. Calculate the roof area in squares (sq ft ÷ 100), including all slopes.
  2. Add waste: often around 10% for simple gable roofs and 15% or more for hips and valleys.
  3. Multiply by bundles per square (usually 3).
  4. Add hip and ridge caps and starter strips, which are sold separately.
  5. Compare the bundle total with the pallet count. Suppliers commonly sell partial pallets.

Pallet deposits and returns

Roofing distributors often charge for pallets or include a refundable pallet deposit on delivered orders, and roofers commonly return pallets with the dumpster run or the next pickup. Terms vary by supplier; ask when you order.

Frequently asked questions

How many squares are in a pallet of shingles?

Divide the bundle count by the bundles per square. Most architectural and 3-tab shingles are 3 bundles per square, so a 42-bundle pallet is 14 squares and a 52-bundle pallet is about 17.3 squares.

How much does a bundle of shingles weigh?

Architectural bundles commonly weigh roughly 65–80 lb and 3-tab bundles somewhat less. The manufacturer's product data gives the weight per square for your product.

Can a pallet of shingles go on a roof?

Suppliers usually boom-deliver bundles onto the roof and spread them across the ridge rather than setting a whole pallet in one spot. Ask the roofer or engineer about roof loading for heavy products or older structures.
