How many cinder blocks are on a pallet?
A standard cube (pallet) of 8 × 8 × 16 in concrete blocks usually holds 90 blocks, though some producers ship 72. Typical cubes are 150 of 4 in, 120 of 6 in and about 60 of 12 in block. A cube of 8 in block weighs roughly 3,000–3,600 lb and builds about 80 sq ft of wall.
Concrete masonry units (CMU), commonly called cinder blocks, are sold by the cube: a strapped stack on a pallet sized so each cube weighs about the same. The count therefore depends on the block's width and weight.
How many blocks are in a cube?
These are the cube counts published by one New York block producer, Cranesville Block, for standard 8 in high × 16 in long units. They are typical of US producers, but not universal.
| Block (W × H × L, nominal) | Blocks per cube | Typical cube weight (est.) | Wall area per cube |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 × 8 × 16 in, 3-core | 150 | about 3,000–3,800 lb | 133 sq ft |
| 6 × 8 × 16 in, 2-core | 120 | about 3,000–3,800 lb | 107 sq ft |
| 8 × 8 × 16 in, 2- or 3-core | 90 | 3,150–3,600 lb (1,430–1,630 kg) | 80 sq ft |
| 8 × 8 × 8 in half block | 180 | about 3,000–3,600 lb | 80 sq ft |
| 8 × 8 × 16 in solid | 45 | about 3,000–3,600 lb | 40 sq ft |
| 12 × 8 × 16 in | about 60 | about 3,000–3,800 lb | 53 sq ft |
Cube weights are estimates from typical unit weights (about 35–40 lb for a hollow normal-weight 8 in block). Other producers stack 8 in block 72 to a cube, which gives a cube of about 2,500–2,900 lb. Lightweight-aggregate block makes a lighter cube. The producer's cube count and unit weight are authoritative.
Wall area assumes nominal 8 × 16 in faces (0.889 sq ft per block) with 3/8 in mortar joints.
How much does a pallet of blocks weigh?
A cube of 90 normal-weight 8 in blocks is about 3,150–3,600 lb (1,430–1,630 kg) before the pallet, and the pallet adds roughly 40–70 lb. See how much a pallet weighs.
That is well over the payload of most half-ton pickups and many small utility trailers. Check the payload on your vehicle's door-jamb label and the trailer's GVWR plate. On site, a cube concentrates about 250–300 lb per sq ft under a 48 × 40 in footprint, far more than a residential floor or deck is designed to carry. Put it on the ground, a slab or compacted gravel, close to where you are laying.
What decides the count
- Unit weight. Cubes are built to a weight a boom truck, forklift and pallet can handle. Heavier units mean fewer per cube: a solid 8 in block cube holds half as many as a hollow one.
- Unit width. Blocks are stacked in a fixed number of courses. A 4 in block fits more across the pallet than a 12 in block.
- Pallet footprint. Block pallets are often producer-specific rather than 48 × 40 in. Some cubes are built on heavy hardwood pallets because the load is dense and pallets are reused.
- Producer practice. One yard's 8 in cube is 90, another's is 72. Always check.
How to calculate it yourself
For wall work, divide the wall area by 0.889 sq ft per block, add 5–10% for cuts and breakage, then divide by the cube count. For palletizing your own units, measure one block and use the cases per pallet calculator with a weight cap. Check the loaded weight against the pallet's rating: see pallet load capacity.
Pallet deposits
Block pallets are heavy-duty and expensive for the producer to replace, so a refundable pallet deposit is common at block plants and masonry yards. The yard usually credits it when the pallet comes back in usable condition. Ask for the amount and return terms before delivery.

Frequently asked questions
How many 8x8x16 blocks do I need per square foot of wall?
About 1.125 blocks per square foot, because each block covers 8 × 16 in (0.89 sq ft) including a 3/8 in mortar joint. A 90-block cube builds about 80 sq ft of wall.
What is the difference between a cinder block and a concrete block?
Modern blocks sold as cinder blocks are almost always concrete masonry units (CMU) made with sand, gravel or lightweight aggregate. True cinder aggregate is rarely used today.
How much does one 8x8x16 block weigh?
A hollow normal-weight 8 in block usually weighs roughly 35–40 lb; lightweight-aggregate block is lighter. The producer's submittal sheet gives the exact unit weight.
Do I pay a deposit on the block pallet?
Often. Block producers and masonry yards commonly charge a refundable pallet deposit. Terms vary by yard.

- What fits on a palletHow many bags of concrete are on a pallet?A full pallet of bagged concrete mix typically holds 42 bags of 80 lb, 56 bags of 60 lb, 64 bags of 50 lb or 80 bags of 40 lb. Each is about 3,200–3,360 lb of product (roughly 1.5 t) and yields about 0.9 cubic yards of concrete.
- What fits on a palletHow many pavers are on a pallet?A pallet (bundle) of standard 60 mm (2-3/8 in) 4 × 8 in concrete pavers usually holds 480–540 pieces, covers about 100–120 sq ft and weighs about 2,900–3,300 lb. Thicker 80 mm pavers come about 80–95 sq ft to a pallet at similar weight.
- GuidesHow much does a pallet weigh? Weights by type, material and moistureA standard 48 × 40 wood stringer pallet weighs about 30 to 60 lb (14 to 27 kg). New green hardwood pallets sit at the top of that range and dry ones near the bottom. A EUR pallet weighs about 25 kg (55 lb), pooled 48 × 40 block pallets about 60 to 70 lb, and plastic pallets 14 to 70 lb depending on type.

- IndustriesPallets for building materials: bags, block, brick, pavers and roofingBuilding materials put the heaviest loads on ordinary pallets: bagged concrete, block, pavers and shingles often exceed 3,000 lb. The industry uses heavy-duty wood pallets, winged pallets for bags and product-specific bases for brick and drywall, stored outdoors and often returned for a deposit.
- GuidesHow much weight can a pallet hold? Static, dynamic and racking capacityIt depends on how the pallet is supported. A typical 48 × 40 wood pallet safely carries about 1,500 to 2,800 lb (680 to 1,270 kg) in racking or on forks, and several times that on a flat floor. A EUR pallet is rated 1,500 kg.
