1140 × 1140 pallet (CP3, CP8, CP9): dimensions, weight and specs

Summary

A 1140 × 1140 mm pallet (44.9 × 44.9 in) is the square chemical-industry pallet, made as the CP3 (138 mm tall), CP8 and CP9 (156 mm tall). It carries drums, octabins and bulk bags, and two fit side by side inside an ISO shipping container.

The 1140 × 1140 mm pallet (44.9 × 44.9 in) is the square CP pallet of the European chemical and plastics industries. It is made in three standard versions, CP3, CP8 and CP9, and is used for drums, octabins, bulk bags (FIBCs) and bagged polymer. The CP system was defined by the European chemical and plastics industry associations (VCI and APME), and EPAL lists the CP pallets among its load carriers.

What are the dimensions of a 1140 × 1140 pallet?

A 1140 × 1140 pallet is 1140 mm (44.9 in) square. EPAL lists the heights as:

Pallet Size Height Bottom style
CP3 1140 × 1140 mm 138 mm Runners (bottom boards one way)
CP8 1140 × 1140 mm 156 mm Perimeter-type frame
CP9 1140 × 1140 mm 156 mm Perimeter-type frame

The CP3 is the lighter, runner-bottom design. The CP9 adds a frame-style bottom deck, which supports the pallet better on roller and chain conveyors. Check pallet-jack entry sides on the drawing, since they depend on the bottom layout. The exact board layout of each CP type is set by the CP drawings; ask the supplier for the current drawing.

Typical build at 1140 × 1140

CP pallets are block pallets: top boards on stringerboards and 9 blocks, with the bottom deck varying by type. Wood CP pallets are heat-treated to ISPM 15 for export. Plastic CP3 and CP9 pallets are also made by several molders for closed-loop and hygienic use. You can model a CP-style pallet from the CP1 template in the designer and set the size to 1140 × 1140.

How much does a 1140 × 1140 pallet weigh?

Weight depends on the CP type, wood species and moisture content. As an estimate, wooden CP3 pallets typically weigh roughly 20 to 30 kg and CP9s a little more because of the extra bottom boards. Plastic CP9 models are listed from about 14 kg (light) to about 25 kg (heavy duty) by their makers. Take the exact figure from the supplier's data sheet. See pallet weight.

How much weight can a 1140 × 1140 pallet hold?

Suppliers commonly quote around 1,000 to 1,250 kg for CP3 pallets carrying drums, bags or octabins. There is no single rating: it depends on the maker, the CP type, the load (four drums concentrate load at the chimes) and whether the pallet is racked. Ask for static, dynamic and racked ratings. See pallet load capacity.

Who uses 1140 × 1140 pallets?

  • Chemicals and plastics: drums, octabins of polymer granules, bulk bags. See chemicals.
  • Exporters of square loads: because two fit across a shipping container.

Fit in containers and trucks

Two 1140 × 1140 pallets take 2280 mm across, which fits the roughly 2350 mm inside width of a 20 ft or 40 ft ISO container. That is the usual explanation for the size: a 1200 × 1200 or 48 × 48 pallet does not fit two across. The table above gives container and trailer counts.

Specifying a 1140 × 1140 pallet for a quote

  1. CP type: CP3, CP8 or CP9, and whether EPAL-licensed CP production is required.
  2. Material: wood or plastic.
  3. Load: drums, octabins or bags, count and weight.
  4. Handling: conveyors, racking, pallet jacks.
  5. ISPM 15 heat treatment for wood.

See the RFQ checklist.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between CP3 and CP9?

Both are 1140 × 1140 mm. The CP3 is 138 mm tall with a runner-style bottom (bottom boards in one direction). The CP9 is 156 mm tall with a frame-style bottom deck in both directions, which gives better support on roller and chain conveyors.

What is a CP8 pallet?

The CP8 is also 1140 × 1140 × 156 mm. It differs from the CP9 in its deck design; sources describe the CP8 with an opening in the top deck. Confirm the drawing with the supplier.

Why 1140 mm?

Two 1140 mm pallets take 2280 mm across, which fits the roughly 2350 mm inside width of a standard ISO container. That makes the size efficient for exporting drums and bags.

How much can a CP3 pallet carry?

Suppliers commonly quote around 1,000 to 1,250 kg for CP3 pallets. The actual rating depends on the maker and the load type, so ask for it in writing.
