44 × 44 pallet: dimensions, weight and specs
A 44 × 44 in pallet (1118 × 1118 mm) is a square North American size used for drums, bulk bags (FIBCs) and chemicals. It fits two across an ISO shipping container, which a 48 × 48 does not. Typical wood builds are 3 or 4 stringers, about 4.75 to 5 in tall.

The 44 × 44 in pallet (1118 × 1118 mm) is a square North American pallet used for drums, bulk bags (FIBCs) and chemical loads. Industry lists usually rank it eighth among North American sizes. Its main advantage over the 48 × 48 drum pallet is that two fit side by side in an ISO shipping container.
What are the dimensions of a 44 × 44 pallet?
A 44 × 44 pallet is 44 in (1118 mm) on each side. Overall height is usually about 4.75 to 5.5 in (121 to 140 mm), depending on deck thickness and stringer height. The drawing should state which way the stringers run.
Typical builds at 44 × 44
| Component | General-purpose build | Heavier drum or bulk-bag build |
|---|---|---|
| Top deckboards | 7 boards, 5/8 in, 44 in long | 9 or more boards, 3/4 in, tight gaps |
| Bottom deckboards | 5 boards, 5/8 in | 5 boards, 5/8 to 3/4 in |
| Stringers | 3 × 1-3/8 × 3-1/2 × 44 in | 4 × 1-1/2 × 3-1/2 × 44 in |
| Overall height | 4-3/4 in | 4-7/8 in |
Four standard 55-gallon drums (about 23 in outside diameter each) need about 46 to 47 in in each direction, so they overhang a 44 × 44 slightly. Many 44 × 44 drum loads are smaller drums, or loads where a little chime overhang is accepted. Check your drums before you choose between 44 × 44 and 48 × 48. The drum template is a good starting point: open it in the designer and set the size to 44 × 44.
How much does a 44 × 44 pallet weigh?
The general-purpose build uses about 14 board feet: an estimated 30 lb (14 kg) in dry softwood, 40 lb (18 kg) in kiln-dried hardwood and up to about 61 lb (28 kg) in green hardwood. The heavier drum build is closer to 19 to 20 board feet and proportionally heavier. See pallet weight.
How much weight can a 44 × 44 pallet hold?
It depends on the design, the load and how the pallet is supported. A bulk bag spreads its weight over the deck, while drums concentrate it at the chimes. Ask the manufacturer for static, dynamic and racked ratings for your load type, based on a PDS analysis or ASTM D1185 testing. See pallet load capacity.
Who uses 44 × 44 pallets?
- Chemicals and resins: drums, pails and bulk bags. See chemicals.
- Exporters of drum and bag loads: where a square pallet must fit two across a container.
The European chemical industry solves the same problem with the 1140 × 1140 mm CP3 and CP9 pallets, which are about 44.9 in square.
Fit in trucks and containers
Two 44 × 44 pallets take 88 in across, which fits both a 53 ft dry van and an ISO container. The table above gives the counts. Heavy drum and bag loads often reach the payload limit before the floor is full, so check weight as well as floor positions.

- Size and stringer direction.
- Load: drum or bag count and size, weight each, and allowed overhang.
- Top deck board count, thickness and maximum gap.
- Stringer count and size; notched or not.
- Handling, stacking and racking conditions.
- ISPM 15 heat treatment for export, which is common at this size.

Frequently asked questions
What is a 44x44 pallet used for?
Drums, bulk bags and other chemical and resin loads. It is a common alternative to 48 × 48 when the pallets have to fit two across a shipping container.
Do 44x44 pallets fit in a shipping container?
Yes. Two side by side take 88 in, which fits inside the roughly 92 in inside width of a standard 20 ft or 40 ft container. Two 48 × 48 pallets (96 in) do not.
How much does a 44x44 pallet weigh?
A 3-stringer build with 7 top and 5 bottom boards uses about 14 board feet, roughly 30 lb in dry softwood up to about 61 lb in green hardwood (estimates). Heavy drum builds weigh more.

- TypesDrum pallet: 48 × 48 pallets for four 55-gallon drumsA drum pallet is a heavy-duty pallet sized to carry 55-gallon (208 L) drums, most often a 48 × 48 in (1219 × 1219 mm) square pallet holding four drums. It needs tight deckboard gaps so drum chimes cannot drop between boards, and extra stringers because four filled drums can weigh about 2,000 lb (900 kg) or more.
- IndustriesPallets for the chemical and plastics industryChemical loads (drums, pails, IBCs and 25 kg bags) need heavier, tighter-decked pallets than grocery. Europe uses the CP1 to CP9 block pallets; North America uses 48 × 48 in drum pallets, 42 × 42 and 44 × 44 in sizes and heavy 48 × 40s. Deck gaps and load type matter as much as weight.
