1165 × 1165 pallet (Australian standard): dimensions, weight and specs
A 1165 × 1165 mm pallet (45.9 × 45.9 in) is the Australian standard pallet, defined by AS 4068 and one of the six ISO 6780 sizes. Pooled CHEP and Loscam versions are hardwood block pallets about 150 mm tall. It was sized for Australian rail containers and fits ISO containers poorly.

The 1165 × 1165 mm pallet (45.9 × 45.9 in) is the Australian standard pallet. It is defined by AS 4068 (Flat pallets for materials handling) and is one of the six footprints in ISO 6780. Outside Australia and New Zealand it is rare.
What are the dimensions of a 1165 × 1165 pallet?
A 1165 × 1165 pallet is 1165 mm (45.9 in) square. CHEP lists its Australian standard wooden pallet at 1165 × 1165 × 150 mm (5.9 in tall), and Loscam, the other large Australian pool, also pools this size.
Why 1165 mm?
The size was chosen so that pallets fit the RACE containers used on Australian railways, two side by side. It dates from the post-war period, when the Commonwealth Handling Equipment Pool (CHEP) was set up in Australia. It predates the ISO shipping container, which is why it fits containers poorly.
Typical build at 1165 × 1165
The pooled pallet is a heavy hardwood block pallet with a double-face deck and 4-way forklift entry. Softwood 1165 × 1165 pallets are also made for one-way and lighter duty. The boards are typically thicker than on a Euro pallet. The load a softwood version can carry depends mainly on board thickness, so specify it. To draw one, start from the 1200 × 1000 perimeter template and set the size to 1165 × 1165 in the designer.
How much does a 1165 × 1165 pallet weigh?
Pooled hardwood pallets are commonly quoted at roughly 35 to 40 kg (77 to 88 lb) dry. Hardwood absorbs water, so a wet pallet can weigh more, approaching 50 kg. Softwood versions are lighter. These are published approximations; the pool operator's specification is authoritative. See pallet weight.
How much weight can a 1165 × 1165 pallet hold?
It depends on timber, board thickness and support condition. Published summaries put softwood pallets with thinner boards at around 1 tonne and heavier-board or hardwood pallets at 2 tonnes or more. Pool operators publish their own safe working loads for pooled pallets. For custom pallets, ask the maker for static, dynamic and racked ratings. See pallet load capacity.
Who uses 1165 × 1165 pallets?
- Australian grocery, FMCG and manufacturing: the domestic standard, mostly pooled through CHEP and Loscam. See pallet pooling and CHEP pallets.
- New Zealand: CHEP lists the Australian standard pallet for New Zealand too, alongside a 1200 × 1000 New Zealand standard pallet.
Pooled pallets remain the property of the pool operator; they are hired, not bought.
Fit in containers and trucks
Two 1165 × 1165 pallets need 2330 mm across, which leaves very little clearance in a standard ISO container (inside width about 2350 mm). In practice many exporters from Australia use 1100 × 1100 or 1200 × 1000 pallets for container shipments. Australian trucks and racking are built around the 1165 footprint. The table above shows the computed counts.

- Pooled (hire from CHEP or Loscam) or bought.
- Timber: hardwood or softwood; board thickness.
- Deck style and entry.

- Export route: if the pallet goes into a container, reconsider the size.
- ISPM 15 for export.

Frequently asked questions
What size is a standard Australian pallet?
1165 × 1165 mm (about 45.9 × 45.9 in), with a typical height of about 150 mm. CHEP lists its Australian standard wooden pallet at 1165 × 1165 × 150 mm.
How much does an Australian standard pallet weigh?
Pooled hardwood pallets are commonly quoted at roughly 35 to 40 kg dry, and heavier when wet. Softwood pallets are lighter. Check the pool operator's current specification.
Why is the Australian pallet 1165 mm?
It was sized to fit the RACE containers used on Australian railways, two side by side. It predates ISO shipping containers.
Do Australian pallets fit in shipping containers?
Poorly. Two 1165 mm pallets need 2330 mm, which leaves almost no clearance in a container with about 2350 mm of inside width. Australian exporters often use 1100 × 1100 or 1200 × 1000 pallets instead.
