Nestable plastic pallet: light, cheap and not for racks
A nestable plastic pallet has legs or feet, usually nine, that fit into the pallet below when empty, so stacked empties take little space. It is the lightest and cheapest plastic pallet, about 14–30 lb (6–14 kg) in 48 × 40 in, with 4-way entry. It is not rackable.

Nestable plastic pallets are the cheapest way into plastic. They trade strength and racking ability for low weight and very compact empties, which cuts storage space and return freight.
What is a nestable plastic pallet?
A nestable plastic pallet has a deck on legs (feet) with no bottom deck. The legs are hollow and tapered, so when the pallets are empty each one sits down inside the one below. The standard pattern is nine legs in a 3 × 3 grid, which gives 4-way entry for forklifts and pallet jacks. See nine-leg.
How is a nestable plastic pallet built?
The pallet.design nestable template:
| Feature | Template value | Metric |
|---|---|---|
| Footprint | 48 × 40 in | 1219 × 1016 mm |
| Height | 5-1/2 in | 140 mm |
| Deck | Open (grid) | |
| Base | 9 feet | |
| Resin | Recycled | |
| Entry | 4-way |
Typical variants:
- Open or closed deck. Open grids are lighter and drain; closed decks are easier to clean and support small items.
- Nestable with runners. Some designs add snap-on or molded runners so the pallet can ride conveyors, stack more stably and, in some cases, go in racks.
- Thin-wall export versions made by compression molding from recycled resin, down to about 6.5 kg (14 lb).
Nest ratio
Nesting is the point of the design. Vendors quote nest ratios up to about 4:1: four nested empties in the height of one pallet stacked normally. A trailer of nested empties carries far more pallets than a trailer of stackable ones, so return freight per pallet drops.
Where are nestable plastic pallets used?
- One-way export shipments; see export pallets
- Light to medium loads handled by forklift and pallet jack
- Floor storage without racks
- Retail and distribution loops where empties travel back in bulk
- Clean environments where wood is not allowed but cost must stay low
Pros and limits
| Pros | Limits |
|---|---|
| Lightest and cheapest plastic pallet | Not rackable (except some runner models) |
| Empties nest, saving space and freight | Lower dynamic capacity than rackable pallets |
| 4-way entry | Legs can deflect or break under heavy point loads |
| ISPM 15 exempt | Feet bear on narrow spots when stacked on loads |
| Washable, no nails or splinters | Can slide on conveyors without runners |
Capacity and weight
| Example | Static | Dynamic | Racking | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1200 × 800 × 140 mm, 9 feet, open deck | 2,700 kg (5,952 lb) | 1,000 kg (2,205 lb) | not applicable | 6.5–7.0 kg (14–15 lb) |
| 40 × 48 in nestable | 15,000 lb (6,804 kg) | 2,500 lb (1,134 kg) | not rackable | model dependent |
These are published catalog figures for two models. Typical 48 × 40 nestable pallets weigh about 20–30 lb (9–14 kg). Plastic creeps under sustained load and softens with heat, so dynamic ratings assume short-term handling. Ratings assume a uniformly distributed load. See pallet load capacity.
Do not put nestable pallets in open-beam racks unless the manufacturer rates that specific model for racking at your beam span.
ISPM 15
Plastic pallets are exempt from ISPM 15.
What drives the cost?
As an indicative 2026 US range, new nestable 48 × 40 in plastic pallets cost about $40–80. Cost drivers:
- Resin weight and type (recycled resin is cheaper; virgin for food contact)
- Open vs closed deck
- Runners or reinforcement
- Colour and branding
- Order quantity (stock models often have minimums of 50–100)
- Freight, which nesting reduces

Frequently asked questions
Can nestable plastic pallets be racked?
No. Their feet do not bridge rack beams and they have no bottom deck, so there is no safe bearing surface. Some nestable models with snap-on or molded runners are rated for racking; check the specific model.
What is a nest ratio?
How many empty pallets nest in the height of one stacked pallet. A 4:1 ratio means four nested empties take the same height as one pallet stacked normally. Vendors define it slightly differently, so compare nested heights.
How much weight can a nestable plastic pallet hold?
Examples: one 1200 × 800 mm nestable model is rated 2,700 kg static and 1,000 kg dynamic; one 40 × 48 in model 15,000 lb static and 2,500 lb dynamic. Ratings vary widely by model.
Are nestable plastic pallets good for export?
Yes. They are ISPM 15 exempt, light, and nest to save freight, which makes them a common one-way export choice.
Can nestable pallets be stacked with loads on them?
Loaded nestable pallets can sometimes be stacked if the load is rigid and flat, because the feet bear on the load below. Check the model's rating and the strength of the load underneath.

- TypesPlastic pallets: types, materials, load ratings and how to buy themA plastic pallet is a molded or fabricated pallet made from HDPE or polypropylene. Types range from light nestable pallets (about 14–30 lb) to reinforced rackable pallets (about 35–70 lb). They are washable, ISPM 15 exempt and long-lived, cost several times more than wood, and carry three separate load ratings.
- ComparisonsNestable vs rackable plastic pallets: differences and when to use eachChoose a nestable plastic pallet for floor stacking, one-way export and closed loops where cheap return freight matters, since empties nest into each other. Choose a rackable plastic pallet, with runners or a perimeter base and often steel reinforcement, when loaded pallets sit on open rack beams.
- TypesRackable plastic pallet: runners, reinforcement and racking ratingsA rackable plastic pallet is designed to sit in open-beam racking with nothing underneath. It has runners (3, 5 or 6) or a perimeter or cruciform base, often with steel reinforcement. Racking ratings for 48 × 40 in models are typically about 1,500–4,400 lb, valid only at the tested span and orientation.
- TypesExport pallets: ISPM 15, container sizes and material choicesAn export pallet must meet ISPM 15 (heat-treated and marked wood, or an exempt material such as plastic, presswood, paper or metal), fit the container and the consignee's equipment, and usually be cheap enough to lose. Common choices are HT wood, 45 × 45 in or 1200 × 1000 mm footprints, and nestable plastic.
- GlossaryNine-leg palletA nine-leg pallet stands on nine separate feet in a 3 × 3 grid with no bottom deck. Most nine-leg pallets are nestable plastic or presswood pallets that stack inside each other when empty.
- TypesPresswood pallet: molded wood-fibre, nestable and ISPM 15 exemptA presswood pallet is a one-piece pallet molded from wood fibre and resin under heat and pressure. It has no nails, nests about 2.5:1 to 4:1, weighs roughly 25–35 lb (11–16 kg) in 48 × 40 class sizes and is ISPM 15 exempt as processed wood. It comes in fixed sizes and is not rackable.
- GuidesPlastic pallet buying guide: styles, resins, ratings and costChoose a plastic pallet by how it is handled and stored: nestable for cheap one-way use, stackable for floor stacking, rackable for open-beam racking. Compare static, dynamic and racking ratings only when the test standard and support match. New US prices run about $40–200 (2026 estimates).
More in Plastic pallets
- TypesStackable plastic pallet: built for floor stackingA stackable plastic pallet has a continuous bottom (runners or a perimeter frame) that spreads load onto the floor or the goods below, so loaded pallets can be block-stacked. It sits between nestable pallets (lighter, cheaper) and rackable pallets (reinforced for beams). Many are not rated for racking.
- TypesHygienic plastic pallet: closed decks for food and pharmaA hygienic plastic pallet has a closed, smooth top deck and a closed bottom, with no hollow cavities where dirt, water or bacteria can collect. It is made from virgin HDPE or PP, designed to be washed, and used in food processing, meat, dairy, bakery and pharmaceutical plants.
- TypesPlastic lumber pallet: built like wood from HDPE boardsA plastic lumber pallet is assembled from extruded plastic boards, usually HDPE, in the same stringer or block layouts as a wooden pallet and fastened with screws or nails. It needs no mold, so any size is possible in small quantities. It is ISPM 15 exempt, rot-proof and heavier than wood.
