In food and pharmaceutical plants, the pallet is part of the hygiene system. Wood absorbs moisture, sheds splinters and cannot be sanitised. Standard plastic pallets have open cells that trap dirt. A hygienic pallet removes both problems.
What is a hygienic plastic pallet?
A hygienic plastic pallet is a plastic pallet with sealed, closed surfaces on top and bottom and no internal cavities open to the outside. Every surface can be reached by a spray wash. They are usually made from virgin HDPE or PP and are often coloured (blue is common in food plants) so they stand out from general pallets. See the plastic pallets hub and food-grade pallets.
How is a hygienic plastic pallet built?
The pallet.design hygienic template:
| Feature | Template value | Metric |
|---|---|---|
| Footprint | 47.2 × 31.5 in | 1200 × 800 mm |
| Height | 6.3 in | 160 mm |
| Deck | Closed | |

| Compliance | Food contact, washdown |
Design features to look for:
| Feature | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Closed top deck | Nothing falls through; easy to wipe |
| Closed or welded bottom | No cavities to trap water or debris |
| No open cores in blocks or feet | Stops bacteria harbouring |
| Rounded edges and corners | Faster drying, fewer dirt traps |
| Drain channels | Wash water runs off |
| Sealed reinforcement | Steel inside is fully encapsulated |
| Anti-slip inserts (optional) | Must also be cleanable |
Rotational molding, which makes hollow one-piece parts with sealed walls, is one common process for hygienic designs. Catalog examples include a closed-deck PE pallet with a published range of −30 to +40 °C (−22 to 104 °F), and cleanroom models for pharma.

Capacity and weight
Ratings vary by model. One published hygienic model weighs 18 kg (40 lb) and is rated for a 1,250 kg (2,756 lb) unit load and 1 t (2,205 lb) in racks. As with any plastic pallet, ratings depend on the support condition, temperature and load duration, and they assume a uniform load. See pallet load capacity.
ISPM 15
Plastic pallets are exempt from ISPM 15.
Compliance notes
- Food contact: ask for a letter confirming the resin complies with FDA food-contact regulations. Recycled resin is generally not used for direct food contact.
- Fire: if stored in quantity in a sprinklered building, ask whether the model is listed to UL 2335 or FM 4996. See pallet fire safety.
- Colour coding: many plants assign colours to zones (raw vs cooked, allergen areas).
What drives the cost?
- Virgin resin and heavier sections
- Closed-deck and closed-bottom construction
- Encapsulated reinforcement for racking
- Colour, branding, RFID
- Quantity and freight (hygienic pallets do not nest)
Hygienic pallets usually sit toward the top of the plastic price range; see the plastic pallets hub for indicative bands.

Frequently asked questions
What makes a plastic pallet hygienic?
Closed top and bottom surfaces, no hollow cavities or open cores, smooth or welded runners, rounded edges and drain paths so washing water runs off. Virgin resin that meets food-contact rules is usually specified.
Are hygienic pallets FDA approved?
The FDA does not approve pallets. Vendors mean the resin complies with FDA food-contact regulations. Ask the supplier for a letter of compliance for the specific model and resin.
Can hygienic plastic pallets go through a pallet washer?
They are designed for it. Check the model's maximum wash temperature and chemical compatibility, since plastic softens with heat.
Are hygienic pallets rackable?
Many are, particularly those with perimeter or runner bases and steel reinforcement sealed inside. Check the racking rating at your beam span.

- TypesPlastic pallets: types, materials, load ratings and how to buy themA plastic pallet is a molded or fabricated pallet made from HDPE or polypropylene. Types range from light nestable pallets (about 14–30 lb) to reinforced rackable pallets (about 35–70 lb). They are washable, ISPM 15 exempt and long-lived, cost several times more than wood, and carry three separate load ratings.
- GuidesFood-grade pallets: what the term means and how to specify oneThere is no FDA certification for a food-grade pallet. The term means a clean, dry, uncontaminated pallet: new or top-grade wood, kiln-dried and heat-treated (never methyl bromide), or virgin food-contact plastic. FSMA requires transport equipment that will not make food unsafe.
- IndustriesPallets for pharmaceutical and healthcare productsPharmaceutical plants keep wood out of cleanrooms and GMP areas and use hygienic plastic (closed deck, washable) or aluminum there. Finished goods ship on 48 × 40 in or 1200 × 800 mm wood or plastic pallets to meet distribution, cold-chain and customer rules. The quality system, not a law, sets the material.
- IndustriesPallets for food and beverage manufacturingFood companies run two pallet systems: hygienic plastic or aluminum inside wet and open-product areas, and 48 × 40 in wood or pooled pallets for cased goods. The FDA Sanitary Transportation rule requires suitable, cleanable, sanitary pallets but does not mandate a material.
- StandardsFSMA Sanitary Transportation rule: what it means for palletsThe FDA Sanitary Transportation rule (21 CFR Part 1, Subpart O, published 2016) lists pallets as transportation equipment. Food pallets must be suitable, cleanable, sanitary and stored to prevent contamination. It does not ban wood or require plastic, a set material or "FDA-approved" pallets.
- TypesAluminum pallet: light metal for food, pharma and cleanroomsAn aluminum pallet is a welded metal pallet, usually seal-welded so it can be washed and sanitised. It is lighter than steel, does not rust, is ISPM 15 exempt, and is used in food processing, pharmaceutical cleanrooms and hot or wet processes. It is among the most expensive pallet types.
- IndustriesPallets for dairy: milk, cheese, butter and dairy ingredientsDairy uses 40 × 40 in pallets, the size traditionally linked to dairy in North America, and 48 × 40 in pallets for retail DCs. Plants are cold, wet and washed down, so plastic is common inside and wood must arrive dry. Much fluid milk moves in stacked crates on dollies or pallets.
More in Plastic pallets
- TypesNestable plastic pallet: light, cheap and not for racksA nestable plastic pallet has legs or feet, usually nine, that fit into the pallet below when empty, so stacked empties take little space. It is the lightest and cheapest plastic pallet, about 14–30 lb (6–14 kg) in 48 × 40 in, with 4-way entry. It is not rackable.
- TypesRackable plastic pallet: runners, reinforcement and racking ratingsA rackable plastic pallet is designed to sit in open-beam racking with nothing underneath. It has runners (3, 5 or 6) or a perimeter or cruciform base, often with steel reinforcement. Racking ratings for 48 × 40 in models are typically about 1,500–4,400 lb, valid only at the tested span and orientation.
- TypesStackable plastic pallet: built for floor stackingA stackable plastic pallet has a continuous bottom (runners or a perimeter frame) that spreads load onto the floor or the goods below, so loaded pallets can be block-stacked. It sits between nestable pallets (lighter, cheaper) and rackable pallets (reinforced for beams). Many are not rated for racking.
- TypesPlastic lumber pallet: built like wood from HDPE boardsA plastic lumber pallet is assembled from extruded plastic boards, usually HDPE, in the same stringer or block layouts as a wooden pallet and fastened with screws or nails. It needs no mold, so any size is possible in small quantities. It is ISPM 15 exempt, rot-proof and heavier than wood.
