Stackable plastic pallet: built for floor stacking

Summary

A stackable plastic pallet has a continuous bottom (runners or a perimeter frame) that spreads load onto the floor or the goods below, so loaded pallets can be block-stacked. It sits between nestable pallets (lighter, cheaper) and rackable pallets (reinforced for beams). Many are not rated for racking.

"Stackable" describes a plastic pallet built for block stacking: loaded pallets placed directly on top of each other on the floor. It is a common choice in closed-loop operations that floor-store rather than rack.

What is a stackable plastic pallet?

A stackable plastic pallet has a bottom structure of runners or a perimeter frame that carries the load down onto whatever is below: the floor, or the load on the pallet underneath. Distributor catalogs sort plastic pallets by bottom function into three groups: stackable, rackable and nestable. See block stacking.

How is a stackable plastic pallet built?

Feature Typical
Deck Open or closed
Base 3 runners, 6 runners, or perimeter (picture frame)
Entry 2-way for pallet jacks with runners in one direction; 4-way with a perimeter base
Height about 5–6.5 in (127–165 mm)
Reinforcement Usually none; add-on in some models
Empties Stack flat 1:1 (no nesting)

The continuous base is the key difference from a nestable pallet. Instead of nine small feet pressing into the load below, runners or a frame spread weight along lines or around the perimeter, which protects cartons and lets taller stacks stand safely.

Where are stackable plastic pallets used?

  • Block-stacked floor storage in warehouses without racking
  • Closed-loop shipping between plants
  • Double-stacked loads in trailers
  • Conveyor systems that need a continuous bottom
  • Food and beverage operations that need washable pallets but not racking

Pros and limits

Pros Limits
Spreads load for block stacking Heavier than nestable pallets
Conveyor friendly May not be rated for racking
Very high static ratings Empties stack 1:1, so return freight costs more than nestable
Washable, long life Costs more than nestable
ISPM 15 exempt Runner models may be 2-way for pallet jacks

Capacity and weight

Static ratings for stackable plastic pallets are high. One published 40 × 48 in stackable model is rated 30,000 lb (13,608 kg) static and 4,000 lb (1,814 kg) dynamic. The static rating applies to the bottom pallet on a flat floor under a uniform load. In practice the limit on stack height is usually the load, not the pallet: cartons crush, bags shift and stacks lean. Weight varies by model, typically between nestable (20–30 lb) and rackable (35–55 lb) pallets. See pallet load capacity and pallet stacking patterns.

Note

If a stackable model has no racking rating, do not rack it. Ask for a rackable model instead.

Nestable, stackable or rackable?

Need Choose
Lowest price and compact empties, floor or fork use only Nestable
Loaded pallets block-stacked on the floor, conveyors Stackable
Open-beam racking Rackable
Washdown in food or pharma Hygienic, which can be stackable or rackable

The same manufacturer often sells one footprint in all three bottom styles. Start from how the pallet will be supported, then pick the lightest style that meets it.

ISPM 15

Plastic pallets are exempt from ISPM 15.

What drives the cost?

As an indicative 2026 US range, new stackable 48 × 40 in plastic pallets cost about $60–120. Drivers:

  • Resin weight and type
  • Runner count or perimeter base
  • Open or closed deck
  • Colour, branding, RFID
  • Freight (empties do not nest)
  • Quantity

Specifying a stackable plastic pallet for a quote

  • Footprint, maximum height
  • Deck: open or closed; anti-slip
  • Base: runners (how many, which direction) or perimeter
  • Entry: pallet jack access from which sides
  • Load weight per pallet and stack height
  • Minimum static and dynamic ratings
  • Racking: none (or state if needed, which points to a rackable model)
  • Conveyor direction
  • Temperature range, washdown, food contact
  • Quantity and delivery location

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between stackable and rackable plastic pallets?

Both have a continuous base. A rackable pallet is also stiff enough, often with steel reinforcement, to span rack beams and carries a racking rating. A stackable pallet is designed for floor stacking and may not be rated for racking.

What is the difference between stackable and nestable plastic pallets?

A nestable pallet has legs that fit into the pallet below when empty. A stackable pallet has runners or a frame, so empties stack flat on top of each other (1:1) rather than nesting.

How high can stackable plastic pallets be stacked?

It depends on the pallet's static rating, the weight of each load, and the strength of the goods, which usually limits first. Divide the static rating by the weight above the bottom pallet as a first check, then confirm with the manufacturer.

Can stackable plastic pallets go on conveyors?

Usually yes. Runners or a perimeter base give rollers a continuous surface; perimeter bases convey in both directions.
